I had a high fever a few days ago. Freaked me out a little bit. But getting sick just before winter is common with me, so I may skip a winter cold altogether.

I have the beginning of a cold too. I'm concerned that my eldest son is living on campus in an international residence and coming home at the weekend to do his part time job in a busy supermarket. So much international travel goes on in universities and teenagers are getting sick before their parents so I've read.

We just have to wait and see how it's affecting people before we panic. :pale:

DNA

I'm pretty sure what they have is RNA. The virus invades a cell and sometimes it will swipe it's RNA with the cell's DNA and take the cell over. The Cell becomes more viral like than Cell like.

I was close. I just read stuff even when I'm not totally interested. This is one topic I've never been totally interested in. I just like to learn things for sake of my children when they get sick, so I pay more attention to symptoms and treatments and things like that. Even then, I forget soon after on the important things. Sleep deprivation will do that. Anyway, whatever I read wasn't about cells. It was between viruses i think. But I do find the cell info interesting. I kinda remember reading that years ago now, and I think I envisioned that's how the HIV virus would work.

I wouldn't say I don't care.
But I'm not concerned

My family has been sick, but spring time with allergies and weather changes...it's normal. Nothing too bad, just some mild symptoms. One year old had it worse, but the worse of it only lasted 24 hours.

One thing that this has made me change anything in my life for is that I read that a group of Mexicans were protesting a pig farm in Mexico, and one of the first fatal cases was a little boy who was at that protest. The company that owns the pig farm is in Pennsylvania. They swear their farm is to sanitary standards and none of their pigs have the swine flu. But I can't help to think of the peanut butter scare and all the lies that company had on the matter. Until the Mexican gov't decides to investigate, I can't believe the company. So I will be watching this story more and being a little more hesitant on purchasing ham from companies in PA since I forget the name of the company, so I do need to watch it more. Not because I'm worried about the swine flu, but if they killed a boy through negligence, my money is too good for them.

Edit to add: They were protesting before the swine flu came about, and they were protesting for sanitation issues as I understood it. And, seeing all that our country has done for Puerto Rico (or to Puerto Ricans) and have lied about it, I believe the locals have good reason to be protesting. Whether they were right or close to being right is only the issue.

Sometimes I think that when the media finds a new 'urgent" topic like this, it's to make us forget and feel better about all the comparitively MUCH WORSE and CONSTANT causes of human suffering all over the world, since if swine flu (or north American Influenza) is the greatest worldwide problem currently occupying our minds, then the rest of the world must be marginally close to perfect.

I agree with that but if people are dying from it I still feel sad about it, even if I don't know them. That's why I was a little annoyed at the start of this thread. My little pet peeve is people only caring if it affects them.

Yeah, it's too bad that anyone dies prematurely for any reason, even if the lack of personal involvement softens the blow. I just dislike the seeming hypocrisy (of media all the way down to individual mentality) of almost using one thing to help us all put blinders on about other global issues that, if we're using a basis of comparison of how large an 'epidemic' is to be proportionate to our reaction, are much more alarming and yet have run off the end of media consumers' attention spans.

It's one thing to keep us informed, it's quite another to arbitrarily and relentlessly hammer issues into the forefront of the media consumers' collective reactive consciousness, just to triviallize them by first using them as a mindwipe for yesterday's issue, then again when tomorrow's new hot topic takes over. I see the media-to-individual arrangement as a giant wank-fest: it seems like the appearance of a sincere reaction to me, more industry than journalism.

Today I was listening to the radio about Thatcher. I thought they said Thatcher 'avled' (died) 1990, but they actually said 'avgick' (resigned) 1990. I pointed this out to my parents. my mom said she think Thatcher is still alive today, and my dad replied that we'll see about that now that the swine flu has come.

So now I'm going to call it the Thatcher flu.

At the moment I'm not worried, but if it starts affecting many people in my area then I might start to worry.

I just suddenly started running a high fever today..it started accellerating just a few hours ago.......i am weak, I have body aches and I also have a slight cough. I have NOT been freaking out about swine flu over the past few days...I might have had a little bit of a throat thingy for the past few days, but I didn't think it was anything to worry about...we have been busy...our immune systems have been taxed...and I have not had a fever until today.

When I told Flakey about my symptoms, he told me that it was psychosematic....which to me sounds like he is accusing me of lying....my symptoms are NOT my imagination. I am very frustrated and don't really know what to do at the moment. I keep watching the news for info about what to do if you think you have contracted swine flu, but there is NOTHING to that effect...only info on school closeures...a small handfull of school children have been infected but there is no news of their condition..

There is very little info about cases in my area...a brief mention has the cases numbering into the 20's ...in the third largest city in the united states (I am in Houston TX)

Anyway...I know that i might be just getting sick and that it is not necc. the Swine Flu...but I can't help but be concerned. I don't think I am overreacting...(Flakey seems to think so :( )

We have a really big show tonight and I am supposed to work the bar...I really really REALLY don't want to.....for one, I am feeling too sick and weak...and even if it is not the swine flu, I am most likely contageous...and for two.....one never knows...it MIGHT be the bloody swine flu...What am i supposed to do?

I'd just tell Flakey that you're not feeling well, and stay home. Let him think what he wants, but swine flu or not, you're contagious. Then, I'd go to the doctor tomorrow to find out what it is that you have for sure. That's just my 2 cents, anyway. Hope that you feel better soon.
