hmmm...phones....
I own a cell phone. i never use it. i rarely answer it. I loathe texting and i have it because i have a son and think it is a good idea to have one for that reason. I will check calls sometimes - but it is not a priority at all.

Agree, millie, animals are the only safe friends.
I'm THE hermit. I have to concentrate days before I do my shopping. Must know there is no crowd, before I enter the scene. I'll rather starve to death then to go shopping in a crowd. I never get any visitors, cause I know how to keep ppl on a distance.
I have trained myself well.

Sorry to go OT but I had to reply. Millie, you're not a loser, you seem pretty cool. You're an Autistic Savant and your art is excellent, and tbh I'd much rather talk to you than some extroverted but shallow NT :) You're more interesting, and you've already left a better mark on the world than most people with your art  You cool...

Millie do you have in a sense an agent or someone else that could go to the exhibition for you so you dont have to go. Or maybe you could have a laptop hooked up to a big screen there so you can answer questions while staying at home.

I bet if you asked my neighbors, we are the most hermity on the block. Not only are we tucked away in the corner, but you can barely see the house from the road, but are grass grows really, really tall (haven't found time to cut it yet), and there is still some junk piled up at the head of the driveway that needs to be taken out to the curb.

When we're not busy being hermits, every year we throw a midsummer's party for friends and play old time tunes (with banjos!) in the yard and have a big dance on the lawn.

So maybe our neighbors just think we're white trash...

I'm pretty sure our neighbors think we're a bit of both.

We're very fortunate to have trees completely surrounding our lot, so most of our "deplorable" yard is kept to ourselves. Neighbors, I hear, can be really nasty to each other.

The neighbors that know us, though, really like us. Maybe they are living their fantasy weird lives through us vicariously? :)

Well I suppose it depends on what you mean by hermit. Bodhidharma spent nine years in a cave staring at blank wall. I live in NY surrounded by stimuli, but aside from casual interaction with cashiers neighbors etc.. I probably don't have a conversation with anybody outside my family more than once a month. And it's not that I don't have a positive experience meeting and talking with people, but I just find it very stressful. I like meeting people. Just a little bit. I replay inconsequential conversations in my head for weeks trying to think of better ways to expressed myself or trying to figure out the nuances of what people said to me. If I were meeting people every day then my brain would be overloaded.

I have found a job where I can support myself by working at home. I have frequent email contact with several people. I like email because I feel that I can exercise some control over my tendency towards honesty/rudeness. I rarely have to meet anybody in person.

Yet my dream is actually to have more time to myself. I work all the time. And I'm married with two kids, one AS and one NT. My wife has a very volatile relationship with our AS daughter. Occasionally they are best friends. Often they can't spend five minutes together without getting into a vicious fight. It's evolved to a point where our AS daughter relies on me for everything. I make her breakfast, pack her lunch for school, bring her to school, pick her up from school, get her snack, make her dinner, help her homework and so on. And I've got a nearly infintite amount of work to do at all times.

Sometimes I meet people and it feels awkward to reveal that this is the way I spend all my time because that's not what normal people do, but I'm not really ashamed of it. I'm doing the best that I can. My dream is simply to have more time to read books, travel, grow plants etc...

I'm pretty much confined to my house. I don't have many opportunities at all to go out with other people, and I hate going places by myself.

^contra dancing looks way beyond me - all that energy and touching and trying to learn the moves would be beyond me.
