This is exactly why I don't bother with going to the hair salon anymore. I'm a black woman who's hair is rather kinky and curly. For years, I did what was expected of all black women and got a chemical relaxer put in it to straighten it. Not only did it barely work after doing it for 15 years, it burned the crap out of my scalp leaving chemical burns each time I had it applied every six weeks.
I decided I couldn't take anymore of the pain and hassle after a particularly painful touch-up and went "natural". I wear my hair in its curly state, washing it then letting it be a big afro or small ponytailed afro puff.
It took a while for others to get used to it and I got some flack from my grandmother. But they're more accepting of it now that they know I'm not going back to straightening my hair.
