Pills, pills, pills.

Stimulants can only quieten the loud and packed out commuter carriage that is my thoughts.

Sometimes just focusing on something that requires me to concentrate, when I am able to actually focus, it calms me down. Like reading a book.

Exercise makes me worse. Well I get a lot of thoughts and then clarity of mind.

Alcohol also makes me worse especially when I begin to verbalise my thoughts.

Marijuana makes me fall asleep but if I smoke it I can have psychosis and seizures.

I take two Benedryl. I have to take them at night or I would never get to sleep. I used to take Lorazepam & Klonopin.

Good point. The only way I know to stop it, or at least interrupt it, is to consciously "change the subject" - preferably to one of my current projects. That at least calms me down for a bit.

I don't know that it's possible. But, I have been pondering a similar question. What is the main difference between this type of racing thought in ASD and in OCD? I seem to have both, but I'm not sure where my thoughts linked to one stops and where my thoughts linked to the other begin. I've read before that the difference is that the obsessive thoughts related to OCD cause distress, while obsessive thoughts associated with autism do not, but is that really the case? According to this thread it doesn't seem to be.

Only answer I have found is anti psychotics. I wasn't really given a choice in it, it was that or sectioned. I was literally beating myself to death :(

At least now the war only rages in my head in the day. Once 11pm comes around and the meds knock me out and allow me to sleep.

Before relating myself to Spock, I was "the Count" from Seseme Street.

"I am the Count, and I love to count!"

But seriously, any decent puzzle book helps stop thoughts, good book also, preferably one I read before. Thats how I get to sleep.

During the day, get a song going in your head, one you like, make sure you remember a few specific words of it to start it again if you wander off it. That mostly pushes out other thoughts for me unless I'm stressed. Then I don't know.

I think I only have the random thoughts of someone with ADHD. Sometimes I get anxious thoughts but I can stop them before they begin to consume me.

I'm trying to figure out what obsessive thoughts in autism are like. I should probably read the rest of the thread, haha.

Edit: Nope. Still confused.

:!: Sometimes meditation works to quiet my brain or slow it down and the only thing that seems to make it stop is going to sleep. :tired:

I get up and write the thought down or draw the design etc. Then I try to distract myself by reading to get back to sleep. This gives me a 50% chance of getting back to sleep, if I just do nothing & lie in bed then I have 0% chance because my brain won't let it go until its safely written somewhere.

Sorry it didn't work, maybe meditation or going to sleep listening to a relaxation CD. Then you might be more relaxed to start with and get better sleep.

Have you tried the well known stuff like avoiding too much caffeine, nicotine etc, I know I'm more sensitive to most things than most people, so that helps me if I avoid them.

I can't pretend to be doing any better myself, four hours last night, then I had to leave my family to the bus for a trip away, then bad dreams about the dangers of coach travel after I got back to bed. Not a normal night, really tired now, with two more 30 mile trips to do today on twisty roads.

I doubt I'll be awake long enough tonight to put on my CD!

Valium (on prescription) is quite good for turning down the noise. I have recently been prescribed Strattera for my ADHD and that does quite a good job of turning down the noise and creating a real feeling of calm

Exercise, sleep and nutrition. If any of these are off, the brain is off.

It is a horrible cycle that will lead to depression. Med can sometimes kick start/motivate enough to get those three things back in order.
