I think it may depend on your company. Now that you're specifying it, and refer to examples of other WP posters experiencing the same thing, I am recalling that, in my life, a lot of people are quite positive when I talk about my interests. A lot of relatives, friends, classmates, coworkers... enjoy that I have/had some knowledge on my favourite subjects, and were generally very keen on listening to what I had to say about it, even if it wasn't something they could say much about.

Also, since I mainly hung out with geeks and nerds in secondary school, we didn't shy away from conversation topics that are considered 'high-brow' by some people. We didn't make a habit out of it, though; we preferred to discuss the latest episode of Dragon Ball Z.

I don't get why so many people rush to change the subject when an opportunity to discuss my obsession comes up. Because I thought most people (most Americans anyway) had strong opinions about what they liked and didn't like about the stores they shopped at often.

I was horrified to discover that my online friend of three years, who shared my exact same obsession, was gay. Now I know most religions are not to be trusted, but I think there must be a good reason that most religions condemn homosexuality. But a better question is... why do most religions seem to condemn intellectualism?

Here are some extreme examples of obvious anti-intellectualism that I've noticed from other people in my life:

1. When I was 10 years old, I asked my mom (just as a "test") what company made our car. Not the brand with a logo on the front, but the actual corporation. She gave me the wrong answer on purpose and lectured me about how most people basically don't care about such things.

2. When I was 11, I was in my health class at school, and we had a discussion about prescription drugs. I raised my hand to ask the teacher (who I normally was on good terms with) what drugstore chain she used, because she brought up the fact that she got prescription discounts. Not her, but a "learning assistant" embarrassed me in front of the class by making fun of my "weird" question. I don't remember any of her words in particular, but I've made my point.

Back on topic though, I guess my real question is this: why do NTs always seem so easily bored by Aspie interests and hobbies? If this has actually been discussed at length before on this site, could someone please send me a link to the thread?
Aspies generally have much narrower interests. I am not sure it is worth debating why NT's get bored easily, why not just accept that's the way it is and make the adjustment. For the most part I am quiet at work.I learned long ago the majority of people don't share my obsessions and interest's .I elaborate on my obsessions ONLY if I feel the other party has a genuine interest.

Why do intellectuals hate the ones who don't measure up to them?

Some people are so willing to believe lies like:

-the most important and meaningful thing is how you look, how much money you have, etc. (I call this shallow)
-all peoples have achieved equality in the US

Although I don't understand them, and I get angry at them for what seems to be a shallow way to live one's life, (and judge other's lives by) I really try to understand people like this. I know there is an emotion running deeply under them possibly that makes them act that way. (For instance, my sister outright ignoring what is true if it is unpleasant to her.) Not all NTs are shallow or anything... just some are and I am sure these would annoy some NTs, too! Some are deeply emotionally intelligent (these people I admire for their gifts).

Why do our NT parents and teachers seem to try and do everything in their power to attack our interests and hobbies?

I hereby declare that anyone whom is prejudice or hateful towards smart people that they stop using the following.

1. Deoderant
2. Shampoo, conditioner.
3. houses
4. Microwaves
5. Cd players
6. Dvd players.
7. Throw away your computer, it was made by smart people.
8. Don't drive a car or drive on roads period. Some smart person came up with roads AND cars!
9. Don't use stoves. You should eat things raw. A smart person figured out how to rub sticks together to produce fire.
10. Don't use electricity.
11. Clothes. Stop wearing them.
12. Stop listening to music. It requires one of those creative types to make it.
13. Boycott televisions.
14. Couches? Who needs them?
15. Sunglasses and glasses, contact lenses. Nah whatever. Who came up with that bright idea? Oh yeah another smart person :( Frowned on.
16. Stop sending your kids to parks with swings, slides and other equipment smart people came up with.
17. Stop using toilets. Smart person came up with that idea.
18. Traffic lights. Just put your hands over your eyes and hope you don't get in a crash since one of those systemizers decided we needed traffic lights to control us. Down with that sorta thing!
19. Bras. Women stop wearing them.
20. Disposable diapers? Nah, the world is your baby's new toilet.
21. No toys. Toys engineered by some low-life scumbag smart person aren't worthy of your attention nor should your child use them especially if they are those learning toys!
22. Don't listen to the theory that the world is round. It's still flat.

This is just the small list of how to fully become a full fleged prejudice against smart people member of society.

Down with it all!

Well it's a good thing I like smart people because I'd have to stop typing on this forum.

NT's have smaller brains than aspies, and are less intelligent in many ways[apart from emotional intelligence]

Because they consider us inferior, any time we appear too smart[even tho they may place little value on intelligence] causes them to go into self defence mode, and they become verbally combative, gang up on us, bully[tell us all about it bright boy]

or some other act to puff their feathers and take away their [now] feeling of inadequacy....
hmmm, maybe that makes them less emotionally intelligent?? or just dislikers of intelligence

What's weird about your question? It's not even an intellectual thing, is it? Sounds like a valid obvious question to me. I think the assistant is the weird one.

I'm sure we know not all. But, it falls on the same principle of dotting all I's and crossing all of your T's -- "The teachers pet." Either you're in or out. "Look how clever I am with my life - look at my education - look at my economic status -- but look what they do." I'm sure it is an uninformed prejudice. Such ones lack experience working with people; but would likely find that others' have strengths that they lack or are missing...... this could be character, etc.

We can't split up the humanity into "Smart Aspies" and "Dumb NT's" as that's not the correct division. I would split up the humanity into "not gregarious" against "gregarious", or "creatives" and "followers".

The majority of humanity is gregarious, feels comfortable in a crowd and don't care being part of the mass. They are "followers" too, they use all the gadgets created by the "creatives"; "creatives" are a minority that usually (not always) are not gregarious.

Generally the "not gregarious creative" person is introverted, and aspies are practically all introverted people, but not all aspies are creative as not all NT's are followers. This is the reason I don't believe in the division "Aspies are smart" and "NT's are idiots". You can be part of the minority, but you are not all the minority.

I almost cried when I read this. Not saying I don't believe you, but I never really thought about this stuff before. It's starting to make more sense to me why few other people seem to think like me...

Historically, I think a lot of people who were considered intellectual (by the non-intellectuals around them) were disliked because they were assumed to be gay. Or maybe it was the other way around, gays were disliked because they were intellectual and were always causing a stir in politics. I'm straight but have often been assumed to be gay because I look "cute" and come across as intellectual. Now I'm worried that my parents think I'm gay because I'm 19 and have never been on a date, and showed interest in girls at an early age, but I stopped caring ironically around the time I hit puberty...

This correlation of gay and intellect already reminds me of a movie I know called Idiocracy. Everyone in that movie, if they didn't speak the dumbed down dialect, they called them "gay". But that's hardly the best part of that movie.

Why are you so horrified? Afaik, being gay isn't contagious. I consider it just another natural variation of human. I have had gay friends in life (heck my beloved cousin too is gay) and all these years later of hanging around them, I'm still straight, because I was just concocted to be straight in utero. If most religions aren't to be trusted, then why are you trusting their stance? Organized religion attracts sheeple. You get that many people in a room together, it amounts to that much more intolerance. At one point in time they too made excuses for things like racism. We haven't even fully sorted racism, and already homophobia is the new racism. Religion condemns intellectualism because they believe that faith should be blind without questioning, and they don't acknowledge that questioning leads to understanding and knowing, and corrupt humans have this desire to control people and the way they think to their advantage. They don't like intellectuals because they're not as able to have power over or influence them like they would want to.

Great points about pseudo-intellectuals! They care more about how smart they are PERCEIVED to be than how smart they actually ARE.

Well, I for one have indeed been perceived as very smart, and have repeatedly tested in the gifted range on tests. But those things matter little to me compared to how much I ACTUALLY FIND OUT ABOUT THE WORLD. The way I see it, whenever I realize I'm wrong and admit it, I gain knowledge. Isn't the ability to gain knowledge what intelligence is all about?

I also feel no need to be THE smartest. Only one out of 7 billion can hold that title. It would be a sad state to have only one person in the entire world "adequately" smart... No matter how many times I'm truly #1 in intelligence in a group, I still reckon that there are people smarter than me out there. Hell, I would LOVE to meet someone significantly smarter than me! And I'd be THRILLED to find out that someone existed whose intelligence was farther above mine than mine is above the "average" person!!

I've found that honesty and true intelligence show with time.

I like the way you think. I think it's good to have a naturally curious pull towards knowledge.

America loves the stupid. TV commercials and TV shows are directed towards the stupid. Most TV game shows are designed around the stupid. You only need 1/10th of a functional brain to appreciate Wheel Of Fortune or any other ridiculous TV program. There's still hope, though. All is not lost. Every so often a Nova will show up, or a Nature program. Those fascinate me to no end. The other crap? Not so much.

"I'm going to solve the puzzleee... ERR Columbus sailed the ocean bluuurree in... 1892!!" - The last time I bothered flipping past wheel of fortune on tv.

Every great once in a while I find something worthwhile on the tv set, but it's a rarity and most of the time I don't care to go turn the thing on.

There was one rockin' old lady I knew from my school about 6 years ago-- she was in her 70's, and she said "now, a lot of my peers are going more into the retirement community, and sometimes I go over there and play piano for them, but if you catch me drooling at the mouth and watching brainrot like wheel of fortune, then just shoot me."

Nova does have some good programs. Sometimes there are good nature programs as well.
