Two things happened at about the same time, and they show impaired theory of mind:
1. I found my birth certificate which had my stepfather's name on it. I knew he wasn't my father so knew the document was false, and assumed since I had no father that I was either an alien or the product of immaculate conception. I was about 11.
2. I realized people couldn't hear my thoughts, or read my mind, also at age 11.

The fist thing that made a doctor think I might show signs of autism was at one of those standard personality tests for 2-year-old babies, when he showed me a picture-book and I told him that WASN'T the sun, because the sun doesn't have any triangles hanging from it. He decided to dismiss that diagnosis, though, because I was playing with the other kids in the waiting room without the typical interaction problems and I had normal speech development. Of course, my fixation on geometry could have shown him something was wrong, as well as my lack of change in facial expression, my general clumsiness and my habit to repeat things like opening and shutting a door or playing with the light switch all day, but surprisingly the "official" diagnosis with AS came only when I was 16...

I think one of my first moments is when I was out in the playgrounds with a nanny, and I told her I didn't want to play with the "babies". Then I was somewhere 3-5 (It's hard to place the instance on a timeline) Also, I generally found it more stimulating to talk to adults than kids, and I was more attached to thing than to humans. I also was (and still am) a compulsive collector.

Here's one: When I was little I loved to "cut and paste" = clipping images from magazines, newspapers and glueing onto paper. I was obsessive about "cutting and pasting!" I would cut and paste, without stopping, indefinitely (hours and hours). I had little scissors and my hand was so abraded from holding the scissors I had blood poisoning and had to be treated at the hospital. I had 5 treatments for a red streak running up my arm from holding scissors that were cutting into my hand because of cutting and pasting. The doctor took away my scissors.
