Could be.

Or, it could be that I am way more comfortable behind the camera than in front of it, so I hardly have any photos of myself and none suitable for a tiny avatar.

But I did get an interesting closeup last Summer of one of my cats who often resembles road-kill when sleeping. Road-kill being how I feel a lot of the time, I felt it was a more descriptive representation than any closeup of my face might be.

is free and has better editing options than the useless mspaint or that other crap one windows has.

My avatar says that I am very deep. Or complex. Or that I give you a headache if you stare at me too long!

I hate posing for photos plus I would have to look at myself everytime I'm on WP which is something I try to avoid doing.

I use this one as I like shadows.

This 3rd Twilight avatar still expresses my love for that series.

It's interesting that people post a real picture in the picture threads but still use a graphic as an avatar.
What does ones avatar have to say about the person who adopts it?
Tell us about your avatar if you want to.
Who else has a theory about it?

It's just whatever they felt like putting up. Those feeling depend on the person, the time, and their perception of internet forum.

What do you think of people that try to coerce others into putting up a photo avatar?

I wanted to put up a photo of a Lego person (my hobby), or perhaps one of my fractals (other hobby), but I couldn't find a way to make a picture fit the size constraints. So, I drew this silly little thing on Paint.

I think it's nice when people put pictures of themselves, but I'm such a private person, that makes me feel a bit too exposed.
