I hate math and science, im actually a very very creative type. It confuses me why people think we are all the same.

I strongly dislike how people tarnish us all with the same brush!!

I am the creative type too, I am rubbish at maths. I do like science though expecially biology.
I've wondered why people always link aspies to maths geniouses, because most aspies I know aren't amazing at maths they're just averge/good and in my case crap. It's funny that my AS friend's mentor had this assumption that he is good at maths, when really he gets quite a few answers wrong, he isn't bad at maths but not as good as his mentor thinks he would be.

I hated science, math, history, etc. I always loved art and architecture. I do have a love for science now as an adult, though, and wish I'd been more interested in it as a child.

I think the answer is statistical and related to the nature of AS. The lack of empathy makes the touchy-feely stuff difficult. The obsession with detail easily translates to being able to handle the details of math and science.

Personally, I've been called a "human computer", "human encyclpedia", and "walking dictionary". At recent retirement party for a high school teacher, those teachers who remembered me figured that I was working in math or science. I work in quantitative social science. That's close enough.

I'm not sure, but I'm also not sure why science and creativity are commonly though of as opposites.

I think, in the USA at least, AS is sort of thought of (by people who don't know better) as "ultra-nerd syndrome," and that implies math, science, computer, etc interests.

What is the math-er? topic

On paper, math is quite simple as long as the steps are followed. it is the application which is difficult (actually, anything is easy for me when done on paper, theoretically).

Creativity is really a practical matter, so for me it is really quite difficult. I do not seem to fit the aspie "norm", Ironic, is it not? But the so-called link with maths and logic is quite weak, as others have already stated.

Alot of aspies are into statistics and numbers.. I was as a kid. I used to love math and was really good at it, then algebra was brought into existance, and I stopped caring completely.

Just a stereotype I suppose.

I'm also confused as to why people think that it's math/science or creativity. Math and science require a lot of creativity, otherwise nothing would ever be discovered.
Creativity isn't only about imagery, writing and music. It affects every part of life. If anything, I think creativity, in all it's forms, is heavily present in all aspies. Not nessecarily superior to NT's, but in many cases much more focused.

Ahh....very well said. 8)

As for me, I'm awful at Math and Science. My forte is English, History, and Music.

Because that is how we are portrayed as so it makes people think we are all good with math and into science and the geeky stuff.

I like to write, I am not good at math and I am not into science.

THAT is a very insightful statement. I agree with you and Lecks.

OP, your statement is also absolutely correct. The dark gift manifests itself differently in each of us.

Through mass testing it was found that the functional level of math in the general population is half way through Eighth Grade with a C-.

That is the same bar used in the GED.

Anyone who made an A, must have cheated or been an aspie.

You know, I'm not terribly good at math, especially when I'm forced to show my work.
Really, I'm just not very good at following any kind of process. I seem to excel where I can just obey whatever commands are issued by my brain, on the fly.

But I can code. I can't plan the code, but I can code.
In fact, I can code just about anything as long as I don't think about it too much. I wrote a functional MMO engine from scratch when I was 12, and I manage to scrape by as a programmer now even though it's more structured. (it's very taxing though)

As long as I don't think too hard about what I'm doing, it comes easily.

I've always had this theory that this sort of thinking involves the right brain--more intuition than logic. I can imagine that if one could apply it to mathematics, it would be mind-blowing.

Well, I think it's because of the movie "Rain Man" that the NT public assumes that all autistics are awesome with math. I mean, I am, but I'm sure that there are some examples of merely mediocre math/logic skills among Auties/Aspies.

I have to agree with that ! I am a scientist but I am not very keen on maths. The maths fans might hate me for this but I would like to point out that much of chemistry and biology can not be understood with just maths. The chemical and biological enigmas can not be explained using maths they can only be understood by those who can think in the right way.
