I sometimes do. I hate being tied to one place, and I've lived in the same city for pretty much my entire life, so I really don't know anything different. I'd love to own an RV and just wander the western US. I don't know how I'd pay for it though. Gas is expensive, and so is food. I could repair computers for money, but I asked on an RV forum and they didn't think it was feasible. Most full time travelers who work do something called "workamping" where they serve as campground monitors basically, and mediate disputes and clean up trash and stuff. Not only does it require you to be in one place for several months, it requires people skills, and the ability and willingness to continually apply for jobs with the National Park Service (USA) or even worse private park owners. So I couldn't do it. A few people do crafts and stuff. There's a lot of retirees living off pensions, we'll see how long THAT lasts. I looked into investments, but investing for a capital gain is one thing, and looking to live off it is quite another. Stocks will likely not go back up for a very long time, and companies are doing away with dividends. Bonds pay 3.5%, certificates of deposit pay 2%. Real estate requires you to be stationary. So I wouldn't be able to do it. But it sucks just looking at the same things every day.

yes I would like to get a van and travel but as yet I cant drive.

I move every short while, in my whole life the longest I lived somewhere was 4 years.

Im like the littlest hobo lol

I prefer moving often as it is interesting/stimulating and avoids closeness with people.

Yes yes I would love that. :sunny:

How would one receive a steady income like that though? There can't be many options out there.

If I didn't have kids, I would love to do that. The longest I've ever stayed in one place is 5 years. The shortest amount of time was 3 months. I think I would need a homebase though. A place to come back to every once in awhile when I hit burnout. And then head back out again when I get the itch to travel. That would be cool. I'd have to bring a dog with me though. I need a pet with me. 8)

I am an inveterate wanderer/traveler. As a kid I was enthralled by maps, atlases, globes, books about exploration/adventurism, etc. Everyone else wanted to go to Disney World or "up to the lake" for vacations--I wanted desperately to go to China, Germany, Ecuador, etc etc etc. I stayed up late into the night listening to foreign shortwave radio broadcasts, traveling by "Dx'ing" as the saying goes.

Since then I've been fortunate in that I'm in a profession (medicine) that allows me the freedom to live/travel/work pretty much anywhere in the world, something that I have taken full advantage of over the years. I've spent extended periods of time on every continent on the planet, including Antarctica, usually working or teaching in each place, as opposed to pure "tourist" travel (though I certainly don't object to that kind of travel, either!).

While I admit that I've gotten a little bit "weak and sissy" over the last few years (ie I hate being away from wife/kids nowadays if I can avoid it), my travel addiction/wanderlust still define my life.

So....without rambling on any further, I encourage anyone inclined to do so to get out there and see/experience as much of the world as you can. I don't remember who said it, but there's a quote about "Living without traveling is like reading only one page of a book."

I definitely wish I could live in a bunch of places, and not just have to pick ONE job, and ONE place to live forever. I wish I could just pick up and go whenever I feel like it, and move to any city in the world that I want, and just live and relax without people around me nagging all the time about all different things. I guess I just want a freedom that I probably will never know.

When I was much younger I wanted to travel and not be tied down to any one place. My favorite SciFi Genre is alternate histories and time lines, so I do not want to be tied down to any one world or time either.

Unfortunately the only way to be a Wanderer is to be: either independently wealthy or completely poor and living from day to day and hand to mouth. A situation most of us do not find ourselves in.

Me too. Not only do I want to travel, but travel through to an alternate universe.

I've lived in the same place for 17-18 years. A small town with not much to do.

My younger brother teaches ESL in Taipei-He works for 9 months and saves his money and then travels for 3 months. But he is always very budget oriented. He doesn't want to go to Nepal to stay at a Holiday Inn. My nephew is in Sri Lanka right now. Traveling like this is doable if you are willing to rough it a bit. The largest expense is the air fair. I went to Taiwan and Thailand and it was a life changing experience. It certainly got my sense of what really matters in perspective.

Supposedly, people with AS don't like to travel. Supposedly. As some "general rule." I love it and would love to travel once a month to some new location. I couldn't travel "on the road" because I have a kitten though.

Don't take life so seriously. It isn't permanent!
