I have several traits of Asperger's: no empathy, very poor awareness of my own emotions, absent-mindedness, overtly developed analytical skills. Other symptoms include no friends, no girlfriends, general inability to relate to people, conduct a casual conversation, no passion, poor sense of one's identity.
I learned about Aspergers December last year. Since then I've been wondering how much of this are my hard neurological limitations vs what I can change.
I had my brain scanned/diagnosed at the Sam's Center. The tests showed that overall my brain is very, very good. The only anomaly he was able to observe are mu-wave anomalies which would make it extremely difficult for me to relate to other people and be kind of "stuck in my head" instead. He claims he can fix it using neurofeedback.
What do you think I could expect from the treatment? I do have a strong motivation to develop my emotional awareness as well as empathy. I recently attended one men transformation workshop which feels like it scratched the surface. Put it in other words - I'm fkn desperate.
I'd truly appreciate any input.
Tom

I strongly suspect the guy is a charlatan selling "snake oil" - I presume he wants money for this treatment?

If there were any cure for AS then I would have thought it would be in the news and everybody would be talking about it here.

But if you have money to spare, don't let me stop you trying it.

I'm suspicious of their description of your brain as "very, very good" - not that I'm saying your brain isn't good, just that it smacks of the kind of flattery that's a well-known hallmark of scams.

Try discussing it with your doctor as well.

Sorry to be a "no-hoper" about this - I think the only hope is to search hard for good company. There are billions of people in the world and some of them are very tolerant and non-judgemental, and would befriend an Aspie. Just keep a skeptical eye on people who want your money when their part of the bargain is kind of nebulous.

I don't trust that mu-wave thing. I have NEVER heard of mu-wave measurement being used to diagnose Asperger's.

I don't trust that neurofeedback thing either. If it was that simple, severe AS wouldn't exist, because you could just give the person treatment with neurofeedback and there you go, no more AS.

I think it's a scam.

I have read some websites about neurofeedback in the past. Most results were inconclusive.
Maybe the personal attention and 'exercises' will do you some good, but I do not believe that the concept really cures people.

Thanks for honest responses. I think I'm going to give it a try. I've heard from other sources who had no reason to take anybody's side that neurofeedback has had some success. I agree, if it was that simple then why would there be any aspie left in this world? Really I don't care about anything else. What difference does 2K make? I don't fkn want to live like that anymore. It's fkn hell in this otherwise would-be wonderful world.

Well, if you can afford it, I guess it can do little harm.

But you might like to consider asking for a written warranty, or at least ask him what happens if it doesn't work, and see if he gives a straight answer. Bear in mind that as you're undiagnosed, you might not even have AS, though from the symptoms you spoke of, it would seem likely that you do.

Depending on where you live, 2k could buy you a diagnosis that you might be able to use for benefits, to get the social security people off your back, and to put pressure on an employer to make reasonable adjustments to your working conditions.

Beware also of the placebo effect - if you believe in the effectiveness of this treatment, you could unconsciously start making a supreme effort to behave like an NT. It would then seem to work even if the treatment was having no material effect, but over time you'd exhaust yourself and ultimately find yourself in an even worse position than you would be if you just accepted your condition.

Mu waves are prodced from the activity of your mirror neurons which help you understand the emotions of others along with other things. studies show that people with AS have suppressed mu waves when observing others preforming an action, in comparison to controls. this is why they have been associated with AS.

You can't grow mirror neurons, but you can shape their preformance somewhat. However, you'll never be 'Cured' of AS. Like learning dissabilities, if you got it you got, end of. But theres no harm in trying to make your life alittle more bearable, that is human nature, so good luck and i wish you all the best. Tell us how it goes. :)
