Executive Function test:

One quick way to judge certain executive function deficits.

This looks at one organizational aspect of the mind. It is not meant to be comprehensive but I'd like to see how you all do.

Personally I thought of 3 animals within that minute, and the last one technically might not have made it. I was surprised because I surely know hundreds of animals that begin with 's'. Well, I definately have EF problems, so it's not TOO surprising. Anyway... go for it folks!

I could only think of two: sabre tooth cat and salamander.

I had three. shark, seal and swan.

I got 11, despite getting interrupted by my brother. I do have EFD, so what happens is I get such on the first thing I think of and it's hard to get off it. The fist one I came up with was shark, and then salmon. So I was stuck on shark and salmon. But I know how to work around this little quirk with my brain - even though I kept coming back to shark and salmon, I could think of different second letters or animals liek the ones I named (like other sea animals or other fish) and come up with other animals that way. So my train of thought was something like "Shark, salmon...ok shark, salmon, something else with "sh"...ok shark, shrew, ok now something else...shrimp, shark, salmon, squid, shark, salmon..shrew, squirrel, shark, salmon...shark, salmon, any other rodents...already said shrew...(brother interrrupts)...what about silver something..silver fox, silverfish, shark, salmon, dammit...another insect, no wait, snapping turtle....snake...shark, salmon" LOL

I just got one: squirrel. Of course, I already know I have problems with executive dysfunction. This test made me feel rather silly.

I felt silly even though I probably did well. I know tons of animals, so I could have come up with more. I look at the other answers other people got and I think duh.

I know several tricks to cope with my EFD so it's probably not fair that I took this test. LOL. I also knew Ihad to write down each new animal I thought of, or otherwise at teh end of the minute I would have only remembered shark and salmon. I'm still thinking shark and salmon. I'm going have those two words stuck my head for a few hours now.

Skink, skunk, snake and sloth. I'm more interested in the fact that these animals are all somewhat, well, yucky.

I don't know what Executive Dysfunction is. I do know that all my life I've wished for a book of operating instructions.

Cade that sounds like me too... I first tried this on myself with "B" and got 5 in two minutes, just got stuck going 'bear bee bear bee... bear bear ben! Then I was thinking of "Ben" which was interesting b/c it's not quite right, but yeah anyway, I try to slip around it and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't...

I have to stop myself. Think "bear" and then I start thinking "bears live here, eat that, do this, etc"... going through the available information under 'bear'.

What are your other tricks? Do share please!

Snake, swan, skunk. What's considered to be a normal NT score?

Does silver-back (gorilla) count?

I got stumped after snake and salamander.

6. I sssssssuck. (snake, starling, salamander, seal, seagull, snail. 7 if you count spawn (as in, fish spawn).) Not in order.

someone asked what a normal NT score was, well i dont have aspergers of EFD as far as i know and I got 6 words.

I wonder if this also could be the reason why they say aspies have impaired imagination. Being able to rattle off more than a dozen animals without even thinking could be construed as very imaginative.
