All,

I am relatively new to wrongplanet and have posted only on one of the adult forums. I know this is going to be off topic. I just picked this forum because it has the greatest frequency of posts.

One of the people I corresponded with over the past few days suddenly began to sound very, very distressed and is making comments that sound potentially suicidal (though she has not said she wants to kill herself or anything like that). Is there a procedure here on wrongplanet to check in on people in the event that it appears they may be so distraught they might hurt themselves?

The last comments are on the last page of the forum linked below (the link is page 1, the posts that concerned me are on page 3).

Sorry if I have inadvertently been an alarmist. I have never had anyone say such things in a forum like this so I don't want to run the risk that I miss something that is truly a call for help.

I'd advise you to write to one of the moderators, since this thread could be missed. I recommend sinsboldly as someone to contact.

If her internet protocol is logged on this forum, Alex can pin-point her location and contact appropriate officials if need be. I recommend personally messaging Alex with the information in case he does not see this thread in time.

How do I do that?

there isnt a system in place, had wondered about this before because there's been a few attempts and successful.
Had thought what about giving the choice for people to give their home address to mods if they are likely to attempt suicide,so if they ever mention they're doing it,mods could get emergency people sent over to theirs, but then-it would be a lot of responsibility to put on the mods because if anything did go bad, they could be sued, but can also be sued if people think the mods have not done anything about it even when they have [which WP had been threatened with before],it's almost impossible to get someone traced from an IP,especially if the isp servers are located in a completely different area [like people who get sky broadband here have],or if the user had been using a proxy.

I've also wondered about this very issue. Whilst Wrong Planet cannot interfere (liability) I do think perhaps we could have resources in place for those who are in need. I know WP inhabitants don't want to lose another due to suicide or to suffer needlessly.

And we are not able to give professional advice, for certain! That's a privacy matter. Still, I think maybe a link or contact site might be appropriate.

No_Exit, thank you for picking up my PM; hope that helps her. Contact local resources, such as emergency services, medical doctor or equivalent, is first priority if the one is in acute danger.

Update:

For any still concerned, the user you are worried about (the autistic savant) seems to still be alive and posting on her Autistic Savant Art website.
