Today, 18th of June, 2009, aspies/autistics all over the world are celebrating the 5th Autistic Pride Day!

In Columbus, Ohio, the Autistic Self Advocacy Network will meet with two state representatives to discuss the policy issues that are important to autistic people: http://www.wrongplanet.net/postt101100.html
In Tel Aviv, Israel, the Autistic Community of Israel will be holding an outdoors picnic, in which members of the community will do various presentations about how their autism contributes to their lives:

(Israeli newspaper "nrg-ma'ariv" covers the event here: http://www.nrg.co.il/online/55/ART1/905/577.html )
In Germany, the German newspaper "fair-news.de" covers the Geman events for Autistic Pride Day here:
Pressemitteilung - Autistische Erwachsene fordern Respekt und Chancen: Die Selbsthilfeorganisation "Aspies e.V." feiert ihr fünfjähriges Jubiläum

How are the rest of us celebrating the 5th Autistic Pride Day?

Happy Autistic Pride Day!

I'm going to the ACI picnic. I also bought myself a husky stuffed animal (combines my interest of wolves/dogs and my collecting stuffed animals).

there is a big gathering at the Pioneer Courthouse Square in Portland, OR. I have to work (for incidentals like rent and internet access, food, that sort of thing) or I would take the bus up for the day.

This is cool. I wonder why it was not brought up in my support group or our newsletter.

I'm celebrating by being myself. 8) While it's great to have a day set aside to remind us to embrace the gifts and the challenges (with the accompanying strength to overcome them), being on the autism spectrum presents, every day should be your own personal Autistic Pride Day. After all, it's easy to be proud of oneself when your ways can be validated by the masses, but true pride is when one can still validate themself despite opposition from the masses.

Hans Asperger didn't think so, nor did Leo Kanner; I take what they say over those today, who're just rehashing the same thing, but mixing them all up, and pushing agendas. Dumb? Probably.

You know...

Maybe bigotry gives you a mental boost, but please keep it to yourself.

And I suspect you're mostly joking, but people don't take kindly to that around here, especially about this particular issue.
