My mom and I have started a social club for Aspies in the Seattle area. It's called The Square Pegs Social Club, and we're hoping to make it into more of a place to meet other Aspies and do things together than a support group. We're initially running it off of Meetup.com, but we also have our own domain name registered for when we get going. We're still small, since we just got it up and running this week, but we're hoping to grow it into a fairly large group offering many activities. Anyone in the Seattle area that's interested in meeting other Aspies should check it out!

Good luck Dox47 - I'm nowhere near Seattle, but I want to suggest you arrange activities for at least some of the time that the social club meets. I went to a HFA/Aspie social group here, and we all sat in a room and were shy of each other, except for those monologuing. It was really scary and boring at the same time, probably because the only thing we were supposed to do was socialise, is a very unstructured way. I gave up and went outside and played with the dog :)

We are doing structured activities, since we've experienced the same problems at Aspie support group meetings. There were two really obnoxious people who tended to hijack the meetings and talk endlessly about themselves and their problems, it was really irritating. We have a cabana at a condo to use at first, so we're thinking of starting off with some easy stuff like coffee and some ice breaker questions. Later, we'd like to start doing movie night, or go bowling, stuff like that. We're ambitious, if things go well enough, we'd like to look into acquiring a premises and running a full time Aspie community center sort of thing. We were thinking it would be a space with different sections for watching tv, board games, conversation nooks, all sorts of things. People could purchase a membership, to cover rent and upkeep, and drop in at any time. We're still working out the details, but I think it would be pretty cool if it worked out. My ma is looking to buy an investment property anyway, so finding one with commercial and residential space wouldn't be too difficult, so it's not as far fetched as it sounds. Anyway, we're starting small, but hopefully we'll get some good members, and go from there.

Well, the first meeting is today, wish me luck! I've got no real set agenda, I'm hoping to just get a general feel for what people would like out of a eccentric's social club, as it were. I've also got an ethical quandary in the making. There's a man who is a therapist working with Aspies who would like to attend the meetings, in order to get a better grasp of what adult Apserger's looks like. I have no objection myself, but I'll see what the group thinks of that idea. I keep hearing the words "Aspies in the mist" every time I think about it, kind of funny...

Is there any activity with this club or other relevant Aspergers societies in Seattle? I live in Spokane, but I'd definitely make a point to travel westward to meet a group of aspies.
