Okay, so what's up with this no gluten or milk diet thing?

I can't find any info about it for adults, it's all for parents. Should I not have just eaten that huge heaping bowl of whole-grain-wheat-whatever cereal? Bread is like my favorite food. And I have a HFA friend whose family goes through milk like most people go through water. We seem to both be fine. I think I was mildly allergic to milk when I was a kid, but it doesn't seem to do anything to me now. Is there actually anything to this diet thing? Or does it only work on kids, or what?
Sorry if this is a dead horse, I'm still kind of new to the scene.

I dunno the technicalities but I try to stick with protein and I don't eat a lot of carbs because foods with carbs make me feel sluggish and lethargic. I eat them every once in a while but not as much as other people. Average meal with potatos makes me too sluggish so I leave out the potatos but I still have a bowl of cereal from time to time.

some with ASD's seem to react badly to a high dairy and high casein diet.
I do. i am not really into the stats or research.
All i know is if i eat dairy ad wheat I get sick, sluggish, brain fuzz, swollen and I get bad psoriasis.
I learned the hard way. I stick to a high protein and vegetable diet with rice and soy milk as a substitute.

I'm a major carb and dairy sort of person and healthy as a horse! I can still stack a load of hay, walk all day, or work in tha garden. I don't pick up colds easily, either. So it doesn't seem to do me any harm.

I think it probably varies from person to person. I can't stand cilantro... it makes me want to spew. But I'm hardly going to recommend a cilantro-free diet for everyone... :)

i just eat what tastes good to me and i am happy :) i drink like one litter of milk every day. but i have a friend in late thirties who stopped drinking and eating anything containing milk and he claims picking up colds less than before.

I've been lactose-intolerant since I was 13 and have been gluten-free for 9 years because of my gluten allergy. I've had absolutely no psychological effects from these dietary changes.

I suspect that I have a gluten intolerance, but I've not been tested. I was getting strange neurological symptoms that I can't explain, and after being tested for all kinds of things, I decided to try going gluten-free. The weird dizzy-like feeling, which I was getting all the time, stopped, and so did a mildly unpleasant digestive-tract issue. Last week, I had a slice of pie (gluten in the crust) and the symptoms returned for a few days.

Being on the spectrum doesn't mean that you automatically have food sensitivities, but it turns out that if you do have a food sensitivity (gluten is a big one for ASD people), it can manifest itself in ways that don't seem food related, like feeling foggy in the head, and that kind of thing.

I really ought to get officially tested, but I'm so pissed off at our effing health plan, I don't want to see a doctor again, for fear that they'll charge me $10,000.

Thanks guys. You know elderwanda, I have felt foggy/sleepy all day, and dizzy when I stand up, and like I said, all I've had is that massive bowl of wheat cereal. XD (I was trying to finish off a box..) I guess this is a good place to start an experiment. No wheat tomorrow.

But what about milk? Does it have the same sort of effects, or different ones, or does it vary? (You know, in general for ASD people according to the rules of this diet.)

Hmm, I never really knew what the whole diet thing was all about either, didn't really look into it. But I'm a huge carb lover, heavy milk drinker, really love my breakfast cereal and bagels and spaghetti and all that stuff... but come to think of it, I'm tired/lethargic most of the time and couldn't for the life of me figure out why. I just thought I was a lazy person and that everyone felt this way and just force themselves to deal with it... so could my favorite foods/drink really be why? >_<

basically if u have any bowel problems, gut related problems, seem to notice ur behavior changes after having something with casien or gluten, the diet might be a good idea, but know It is very expensive and very hard to keep with it. If you don't have any problems above, then the diet wont alkways have the affect people with those problems have, instead itll just limit ur diet more. either way good luck wth it.

The GFCF diet is for those who have Celiac's disease; they can't really break down gluten or casein. They haven't been able to find a link between autism and celiac's disease, but the diet has been able to make symptoms of autism less severe. Personally when I was on it I wasn't as irritable and slept better. I'd still be on it if it wasn't so expensive.

Age1600 and Pensieve: damn. Well I'll try it out and see if it does anything worthwhile. How strictly do you have to stick to it? Like, could I cut out most of the gluten and get most of the effect?

It may be worth trying gluten and dairy free for a week. See if you feel noticeably different healthwise. I know of people who have tried it and said it has made a ton of difference... people who seemingly felt fine but then felt 10 times better for that week.

I personally think that ignorance is bliss in this regard. I can't imagine giving up real bread. 8O

I was getting really grouchy and out of sorts for a couple of weeks there, when I realized I had gottten into the habit of having a big bowl of cream of wheat for 'dessert' before bed. I remembered what I learned here on WP and bought a couple of boxes of 'cream of rice' instead. I have finihed one box in a week or so and it is much easier to digest. But I don't notice a change in my behaviour.

yes. I get guttate type. Shocking when it happens. head to toe. bedridden.
I steer clear of alcohol also and tobacco and fizzy drinks and processed food and the psoriasis is not noticeable now. not at all.

also, if you get psoriasis, take flax seed oil in capsules - which has omega 3's, 6's and 9's and these help enormously.
