Here is why I feel I am anti-MENSA and why many people in the autism (aspergers) and other disability communities should become anti-MENSA too.

MENSA does NOT accommodate people with disabilities. They WILL NOT honor an IEP they WILL NOT honor a doctors diagnosis, the test that NTs get and people without dyslexia / dyscalculia or whatever disabling condition you have is the same test YOU will get.

MENSA is stealing money from people in the form of a "pyramid scheme" If you help us we will help you

MENSA is nothing but a smarmy way for people with HIGH IQ scores (Not necessarily truly smart people.) to get a special ID number and ID card to prove, "I made MENSA, I am smarter than 98% of the world." It's not true! Well over that 2% of people could get into this "MENSA ring"

If MENSA Just took the time to honor IEPs and doctor's notes.

Until I see someone show me proof that MENSA honors an IEP or doctors note I am completely anti-MENSA and will stay that way.

I'm sure that there were quite a few modules of the test in which I did very badly but I still got in. From that I would deduce that the concept of multiple intelligence was factored into the structure of the test and is therefore respected more by Mensa than by society in general. That has to be pro-autism as the differences between faculties in the autistic brain are more exaggerated than in the neurotypical brain. I think that there is much more institutionalised discrimination against dyslexia and dyscalculia in the employment aptitude tests that I have done, than in the testing session that I sat for British Mensa in 1993, which consisted of Cattell B and Culture Fair tests.

British and American MENSA are different things but I will take this into account

Maybe you can start making sense!? MENSA should not, and never claimed to(to the best of my knowledge) make it easier for people with disabilities to get in. What should they do, allow people with MR because they are mentally challenged? What does an IEP or doctors diagnosis have to do with anything? They DO accept a LOT of different IQ tests.

At least I agree that many are just pretentious, etc....

I am not saying people with MR should get in.

But I Am saying they should give people with disabilities an equal and level playing field by adapting the test to allow them a equal chance as someone without the disability. i.e someone with dyscalculia can use a calculator in school then why cant they use said calculator at the mENSA test

Mensa accepts most any IQ test, and I believe they have a rather significant ASD population in their membership.

Anyways, I don't see why one would bother with Mensa. I qualified, but never bothered to join- who wants to pay those membership fees?

Exactly why I am not going to even bother to take a "qualifying IQ test"

previous thoughts on mensa is evolving and I personally think its a bit crap because its these people saying my IQ is 130 however here's the deal scientists are very spectulative when it comes to IQ because its not tried and tested. Its a bit like star wars and the midochlorean count for example yeah einstein had a high midochlorian count and as did stephen hawkng BUT scientists and me personally think IQ is a variable I think it only shows how consistant your thought processes are for example I have met someone with 140 and I was thinking circles and elaborating theories when he was just like huh? and every IQ test I have taken has come up with a different result.
I see it now as a veil of ignorance but you can say your smart but are these people actually achieving something No hardly if any actually turn rround with a decent theory.

Note to all viewing I was reading the news and the AMAZING scientists in AMERICA figured out that we need to breathe lol. I sometimes think all these new scientists are ret*d

I see what you mean though with your proposal maybe the posters here should make a movement to go against Mensa and speak out and see if its bull we would probably bring the autistics to our side and finally see how many autistics there actually are in Mensa.

My own membership has been lapsed for about 5 1/2 years, partly because of the fees and partly because of my disorganisation but I think I would like to return after I get diagnosed. I actually first heard of Asperger's from discussions about it between members of Irish Mensa back in about 2000 or 2001 but I didn't really pay much attention, not realizing at the time that the topic would be of relevance to myself. Mensa has many SIGs (Special Interest Groups) and whilst I can't remember from my previous membership whether or not they had an autism/Asperger SIG, i would be very surprised if they did not have that now.

I never took Mensa's test, but I did take the WAIS for other reasons as part of a psychoeducational assessment.

I have a neuropsychological diagnostic evaluation in progress right now to redx my autism. and confirm me from PDD-NOS to a true autism group...

maybe it has a "qualifying IQ test" in it... not that I have much of a desire to join MENSA and start paying their fees for their stupid magazine

I totally agree with you about IQ tests. You know what burns me up about them. Dear Mr. Binet who invented the first one back in 1904 never meant for it to be the defining thing about a person's intelligence. He even specifically warned that it SHOULDN'T be used that way. He had merely been asked by the French government to come up with a way to screen kindergarteners to figure out which ones were likely to need special ed assisstance with academics. That's all it was supposed to do. Then it took on a life of its own. Binet argued in vain that his test shouldn't be used to sort all of humanity into neat little boxes for life. He died in 1911, so he never got to see the really horrible things which were justified by IQ tests.

No love for MENSA here. Although I think it's somewhat pointless to try to get them to make IEP-style accomodations. After all, their entire point is to be LESS inclusive, not more.

The whole point about Mensa is they discriminate over IQ. No shock there.

There is never going to be a 'valid' member. Just ones they let in. It misses what IQ tests are really are used for in practice, which is to find relative deficiencies. They are not that good at telling how smart someone is, they can't measure everything. They don't tell you whether is person is going to come up with something brilliant, or do something noteworthy in their lifetime. There have been people considered geniuses that have scored average or bellow on IQ test.

So yes I think Mensa has to be one of the most pointless organisations every envisioned, however pointless organisations should be allowed to exist nonetheless.

If you are smart enough to get into Mensa, and decide not to join, then perhaps you are smarter than the average Mensa member.

Thanks Janissey that is very interesting indeed and certainly proves that Mensa are somewhat barking up the wrong tree I, this is my new little research project lol

and agree not much Mensa love I think its because their ideaologie alone is pretty flawed yo know the clever people obviously know Binet's work and opinions were completely the polar opposite to Mensa's and one thing that kind of disgusts me with Mensa is that they have the balls to say oh yes every member of ours well 100 000 members is in the top 2% of intelectuals in the world.

Firstly what f***** mathmeticians have they got since 100,000 is not the top 2% of the global population. Secondly their youngest member is 2 and a half years old what does that say about IQ itself but the fact it is a very flawed design how do you know that he is going to be a top ranking intellectual he barely knows able to talk lol.And yes I know the inf says IQ but Binet's own words were it is not a procise measurement of intelligance

Finally look at who is in mensa any big names any lightening bolts no, Stephen Hawkin is not in Mensa even though they were founded in 47 I don't think Einstein was in Mensa. so yeah allthese guys seem to do is read and play chess thats not exactly applying yourself to the benefit of society

I think Mensa first started off as "oh yeah we'll create this society that will help save the world" instead now it is only a bunch of elitists who for sure if they ARE SO CLEVER actually realise IQ is an incredibly flawed system
