Is this an Aspie thing???

It's always sort of seemed strange to me, i've always been considered highly intelligent (i don't mean to toot my own horn, but it's part of the question) and yet i'm the most gullible person i know, things are always coming out completely wrong and not how i mean them, i'm REALLY bad at explaining things (it can be more confusing after i've explained than before), it often (not always, but often) takes me a VERY long time to get jokes and i'm kind of known for having to have them explained to me in detail until it's not funny anymore and then i'm the only one laughing after it's been explained to me. I seem to lack common sense in so many things (the stereotype "blonde" comes to mind), i take things literally "My cat is about to die! He's taking annoying me to a whole new level!" and i'm wondering why people are commenting with LOL when she said her cat was going to die... i got it 2 days later after a few more comments were made!

Is this typical Aspie stuff? It's frustrating and i know so many people online and IRL probably think i'm a complete idiot.

I'm self diagnosed and trying to sift through the things about myself that have always perplexed me to no end.

My parents said I scored above average in 6th grade but I don't appear that smart. There must have been some mistake with the test or unless my LD makes me seem slower. I needed extra help in school while my brother did above grade level math and was a very good student and got good grades without special ed.

Lot of kids thought I was stupid until we moved to Montana, then kids there said I was very smart. Now today people who don't think I'm smart are usually the as*holes that think that.

It's common for aspies to lack common sense, be gullible, slow at getting jokes, taking things literal but yet we still have average or above average intelligence. I was very gullible when I was little I could easily be taken advantage of. Even my own friends would trick me such as they told me when kids make fun of me or pick on me, do this, and they showed me the middle finger. Another time they told me to hide in my bedroom closet and instead they went running home after I closed the door. When I was in sixth grade, kids in my grade told me about a singer and said his name was Jack Off. So I decided to look it up online and typed it in and the teacher caught me and I said I was looking up the singer and said how kids told me about it. Those kids sure got busted and the leader had to apologize to me. I think what they got was a scolding. I think that was naivety there mostly than gullibility or it could be both because I did look it up in school and got caught. That's a way of me being tricked and nearly getting in trouble but I just had to say I was told about him.

I actually thought about dying my hair blonde when I was 14 so people wouldn't expect so much out of me. My excuse would have been "I'm blonde, how should I know?" I never dyed it of course because I don't think I'd look good with blonde hair.

Thanks for your reply :)

Kids can be horrible and always pick on the "weaker" ones.

Thanks guys! That is REALLY good to know! You have no idea! (or maybe you do!)

ViperaAspis, just read your intro, you remind me of my uncle with the way you speak, he was diagnosed with Bi Polar decades ago, probably more likely Aspergers. Top 2% of intelligence in New Zealand when he was tested as a young man etc. etc. He's around your age now too. Nice to meet you :)

Bah. I don't get that joke. :(

Anyway, yes I think it is typical aspie stuff. We tend to take things literally and I think sometimes we can be a bit too trusting. I think a common problem with aspies is that we tend to over-think things like jokes to such a degree that we normally miss the simple, 'obvious' point completely.

Hi, yes your post rings true to me; in fact you sound rather similar to me (I often get the whole "dumb blonde" payouts because of my gullibility, but I am also smart - my finishing score for school was in the top 2-3% of the state).

I used to be gullible up until sometime during my adolescence. I finally figured out that people were trying to deceive me.

I'm just like that. We are just behind on social intelligence.

I have a really hard time explaining things in terms that others can understand, especially if it's one of my "obsessions".
