HELP! I've been through 6 masks. I've been trying for 5 weeks to sleep through the night with the C-pap and have only made it three nights. I've had weekly help from a respiratory therapist and also a physician's assistant. I have to keep it on for a solid month before my sleep doctor will see me, because she needs to examine the records. I pull the mask off during the night and do not remember doing it. I feel at this point that this has to be an autistic sensory issue. What to do?

A LOT of people have this problem, and I'm sure the autistic sensory issues massively magnify it... I'm really not sure what to suggest.. have you looked around online for support groups specifically for dealing with sleeping with a C-Pap machine running? It's something that's going to bug almost everybody, autistic or not, so finding out how other people deal with it might be a good idea..

Thanks for your response, Maggie. I actually started reading up on surgery and considering that an option today. I tried to sign up for a cpap support forum on-line but it will take them a while to approve my membership. I don't know how long. I'm feeling frantic and worried.

Is your face piece (either a mask or nasal pillow) fitted right. If it is fitted right you should have no trouble breathing.

Does your nose become stuffed up while you are asleep? If you, you might be pulling off the mask in order to breath.

I'm going to be doing a sleep study using the equipment at home, and hope that I don't end up doing this. Umm.. there's always duct tape I suppose! Good luck, I hope sleep gets better for you.

I hope I could help, but cannot. I have never tried c-pap. Instead, losing weight has helped me.

I used ot wear a C-pap machine and had the full face mask. They tried the nose mask, but I do not like things up my nose, so I went for the full face. i got used to it after a couple of months, but in hot weather it is very uncomfortable, especially when i do not like the feel the weight of sweat and the mask on my face. Good luck with it all.

Thanks for all of your responses. A respiratory therapist has come out every week to fit my face mask, as it either leaked or was so tight it left marks. I even clipped a barette around the mask strap into my hair and somehow took that off in my sleep, without remembering. We've tried everything.

I think if a surgeon says my particular case of sleep apnea is due to my uvula, I might go through with the surgery.
