Hello, everybody! This is Kyle "The Ghost". I want to ask if any of you are also sensitive to certain noises like I am. For example, I can't stand screeching sounds like metal scraping against metal, but nobody likes that! A baby's crying is WAY too sharp for my ears. Also the "SHH!" sound is bad for me. It is okay to say words with that sound like shower or shape as long as you don't hold the "sh" sound. Anybody else know what I am talking about?

Some sounds have that effect on me, others don't.

e.g. some music has really loud sounds in it, but I actually enjoy listening to those (to the point where I'd happily listen to a 'song' that consisted of just that sound, repeated over and over).

But other sounds just make me want to hurt myself,
e.g. when my mum gets angry over the phone (she hits a frequency I can't stand), the ringing of telephone, those Indian flutes, nails scratching against jeans...

Alot of loud sudden noises make me extremely angry for no reason.

I can relate to that. If a bug buzzes around my ear, it drives me crazy, even though it is really not that big a deal!

LOL! I do that too! Especially with bees, I'm terrified of them.
Yeah, summer's such fun. 8O

Loud, hi-pitched sounds drive me bonkers. If it is continuous I have to leave the room so I don't have a meltdown.

I hate those noises too.

One of my brother's stims is a repeated hissing noise, it drives me crazy, I worry that I'll flip out and attack him when he does that.

When it comes to sounds, there is nothing in this world that aggravates my sensory issues more than a baby crying/screaming. :x I simply cannot stand it!

"Sh" sounds don't bother me, but "sss" sounds (like someone overpronouncing s-es at end ends of words) drives me bonkers. I used to sit near a guy that did that, and it made me want to pull my hair out!

*Geek Mode*

It's a distinction between "Sibilant Fricative" consonants (s and z in English) and "Non-Sibilant Fricative" consonants f, v, th, sh), the siblants are defined by having a very high frequency compared to the other fricatives.

I'm generally less tolerant to sound than the vast majority of people, but I hear ya... sharp, piercing metallic noises particularly suck. And while it doesn't happen when people talk, I really hate even the hint of the noise far off of something with a rough, piercing 'ssh' noise like a buzzsaw or a pressure-washer.

YES.

Today at work someone was messing around with the stereo systems in my department and kept turning it wayyy up.. and every time it went up, i got really tensed up, covered my ears and walked in the other direction.

I think that maybe i've gotten desensitized to some things, though. I really hate high piched noises usually... But when i was little i remember the sound of a triangle(the instrument) in music class always making my eyes water. I was always kind of confused as to why, since my eyes don't have anything to do with hearing... But it always happened, without fail. These days that doesn't happen.

Yay! I'm not the only one.

I feel for ya! Once I had a hearing problem for a while then got it fixed and for a while everything was hyper-loud and I was constantly overloaded by sound.

I was in a shop and the woman in the queue in front of me had a crying toddler. Those high pitched screams were bad enough, but with hyperhearing...I swear, the one thing I wanted from life in that instant was to grab hold of that child and break its neck to make it stop crying.

Loud sudden revving of a Harley's Engine as it rips down the road nearby

Loud screaming...such as on a ride and a bunch of teenagers screaming and shrieking at once.

when there are several small kids screaming loudly and running around the store where I work

Fire Alarm...causes my ears to ring.

I hate the noise of a baby crying, too, but don't mind high-ptiched noise if it's not too loud. I don't have a problem with any language sounds (eg. your sh sound).
