I am the exact same way. There was a guy at work who would "jokingly" refuse to do price checks and I always thought he was being serious, even though he did it every time I called.

The little girl who lives up the street from us does this to us on a regular basis. My son and I are both looking at her like "and that had to do with... what exactly?" or "I was supposed to know that how?"

I don't get how it is funny. She's always saying things like "I'm going to the zoo this weekend!" and I'll respond with something like "oh that will be fun!" then she says "Just kidding!" and cracks up laughing.

I don't get how it's supposed to be funny. Anybody not directly involved in their decision making and plans isn't going to know a darned thing about what they are doing on the weekend. It's only funny to the person saying it, it seems.

Someone once told me his mother was dead, then said, "I was only joking!" He actually said I'm an idiot for believing him

That's an extreme example, but I really don't see what's funny about telling a lie for no reason. :?

How is that even a joke? But yes, I hate it when people "kid" like that, because I never get it, and it is embarrassing and makes me feel unsteady in social situations, like trying to balance on an ice floe.

Yeah, I don't get that kind of humor at all.

IMO, there's no real 'humor' involved. The person doing this just wants the opportunity to laugh at/ridicule someone else's confusion. It appears, to me, to be insensitivity bordering on a type of emotional sadism.

Exactly.

If I want to kid in that manner, I use a very different voice than when I'm serious. I DON'T want to pull one over on anyone. My AS son knows the voice difference, and picks up right away that I'm kidding. That lets him in on it. But, well, he still doesn't see the point to it ... He'll respond, dead pan, "very funny, mom."

For some people, the real fun comes when they succeed in deceiving the other person, but I don't think its right to take your humor at someone else's expense. At least not intentionally.

yeah, none of this is actual humour at all. if anything, it's just a very very base, unsophisticated type of it. they're the ones with the problem.

I can't see any humour in this at all. He must be an NT with a poor grasp of joking and humoristic interaction. :D
