Whats a troll, why's it bad?
don't people enjoy a little conflict in their books.
Isn't that what makes the story interesting?
Is it just cool, to say that trolls are bad, or are they really?
or are people so intent in always stating what they think others want to hear?
Is being politically correct, incorrect; if its not in your nature?
who gets to be the judge of all these things?
mispell edit: here into hear

Someone who presents an alternative point of view and argues the validity of that point using logic can be a wonderful way to keep life interesting. Trolls don't do that. A troll, by definition, posts unsupportable opinions, off-topic messages and/or spammy messages (i.e. posting the same message over and over again) for the sole purpose of disrupting the normal flow of communication. They generally do this in order to feel powerful or important. Why would anyone want to endure that?

that makes sense jetson.
Now why is it used in such loose terms then.
i have been noticing that alot of people are called trolls when in fact they are not.
according to your definition.
Would an appropriate example be what happeh posted in mature, then subsequently kept maintaining outrageous accusations?
And according to the TOS, if i were to state that another person on this site was a troll, when in fact they did not meey your criteria for being a troll; would that constitute a personal attack?
Because it seems to me that one of the worse things you can call a person on-line is a troll.
And then i wonder even further. Could trolling be a spectrum. What i mean is the repetitive single minded focus which seems to be an aspie trait.
So if calling a person a troll is one of the worse things you can call someone on the internet.
And mild form af trolling is an aspie trait.
Then, shouldn't people on this website be a little more courteous about making such an accusation. And shouldn't the TOS clearly define and the moderators act swiftly and decidedly against any person calling another a troll?

ah, i see.
Based upon that, why should one person or group, be allowed to make judgements about anothers actions.
especially when those actions are in a support forum for AS. and the actions are AS related.
shouldn't we be better served trying to make a distinction between actions and intent?

I think it's a case-by-case thing. For exmaple, some people are just plain so clueless that you can't call them trolls even though they post inflammatory stuff; it's not within their capacity to know they're being offensive. ((Nobody in mind here, or for anything followin either)) However, some people know EXACTLY what they're doing when they troll. Someone can "troll" without being a troll, too- they can contribue useful and insighful things to forums, and then just every so often they will push a button or two. Whether or not they get labeled as a troll depends on what posts are read, and/or the percentage of what they put out as trolling, and how strong the troll flavor is.

Happeh wasn't a troll. He was delusional. He was just talking about the world according to him. We were his audience like a writer writes to an audience. Unfortunately his delusions judged people and therefore it appeared offensive to us. Happeh was like watching a beautiful mind 2 without the charming incredible intelligence.
I was told a troll is someone who brings up crap specifically to create offense and conflict in everyone who partakes in the discussion, but it seems like to do that you need to be far more of a malicious intellect than most people are.
It seems to me what a troll is most of the time is some immature, insensative, cruel, opinionated jerk who believes what he says causes people to laugh with him rather than just be hurt and cause the quality of all communication to degrade. Some people attribute this kind of behavior to being 12 or something, but i have met mature 12 year olds(actually the vast majority of them, i very rarely listen to a 12 year old and hear stereotypical "12 year old thoughts"), and i have met 26 year olds who behave like trolls are reported to be. So i think it just has to do with emotional maturity, and general personality.

And as always, these are simply my worthless opinions.
My body is a channel that translates energy from the universe into happiness.
I either express information, or consume it. I am debating which to do right now.
I'm taking a sociology class this semester, which has taught me powerful new bullshitting tactics that will enable me to cut right through the confusion. The role of troll is socially constructed, which means it has no objective basis. A computer program cannot analyze a list of a person's behavior to determine who is a troll and who is not. It really depends on the other person's definition of the situation.
If I'm thoroughly enamored with the Christ (Jesus, who else? ), I would probably rather quickly adjust my view of someone who talks in anything but the most positive way about my Savior buddy to a troll—or worse. Hardline atheists, though, might consider it to be humorous banter akin to what occurs between Democrats and Republicans in U.S. politics (see also The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report on Comedy Central).
I prefer to ignore facts or ingeniously put arguments made against my beliefs and prefer to shut down the reasoning part of my brain in such cases so that I can throw a hissy fit and take all kinds of offense because someone had the audacity to see things differently (not differently from me but differently; my opinions are the norm that all others deviate from). I especially hate it when people employ irony (Socratic, dramatic, etc.), sarcasm, parody, allegories, or novel analogies that may open my mind to a different and, in all likelihood, wrong perspective. It makes me feel hot and cold on the inside, as if I have to go the bathroom. After all, if my adversary were right, I would have already thought of it first.
I know where to draw the line, you don't.
That's why there's discussion of getting you banned and not me.
how am i supposed to react to a statement like that.
maybe, perhaps, i shouldn't react at all.
maybe i should just wonder, why the defensive posturing?

serrisa,
i am not certain what it means as to: what posts are read.
personally, i think that each person reads most new posts, at the very least.
or you could have meant; what posts are read by moderators
or even,
read by individuals who may take offense to the post.
in which case (in the last two definitions) the percentage of trolling type posts become the defining equation. Since, there is no guarantee that the trolling type post will be read, a troller is hedging their bets by playing the percentage game. Therefore the definition of troll could, in fact, be determined and judged by others as such. The basis for this definition, isfrom stereotypical behaviours which are trolling type posts.
once again, that is an AS trait; the stereotypical behaviours.
Furthermore, it is a subjective opinion at best. What about who the person is and what their intentions are? Maybe, the person has a curious nature.
for example;
The well read and provacative; Mr. Neanthumaine.
Others perceptions of him may be based in his posts, which tend towards a fascination with socially deploreable types. However, do any of us truly understand his obsession? Do we even take the time to? Do others, oft times, associate him, with those that he writes about? Has he ever expressed that he admires these people because of their deviant behaviours.
I wonder if it is fair of others to think or even express their ideas that he might be over the edge.
We don't really know him. Nor do we really understand why he holds these things to be fascinating.
Perhaps it is just a product of an overly curious mind, about things that he cannot find logical. Being that he cannot reason why, these people act this way, he simply tries to understand through his obsession.
Perhaps, as well, his intentions (when he looks beyond the here and now) is to understand, for reasons which are positive in intention.
meaning:
maybe, he wants to get in their mind from a purely psychological standpoint. So as he goes through life an pursues his legacy, he may be the person who figures out the treatment, or preventative treatment of anti social behaviours.
or maybe, he just has a personal biased based upon his own lifes experience.
The bottom line is;
Who knows?

I think there are 2 differen't types of trolls that we see on Wrongplanet.net. there is the one that the word referes to which is the troll who is trying to say things just to piss people off and that type of troll is the worse type of person but are not as dangerous as the second type of troll. The second type of troll would be some one who believes strongly in some thing and can not accept that others view things differen'tly to them selfs. So they always bring the topic up trying to convert others to there stream of thought.
As for NeantHumain and religion. Do you just find it easier to stick in your own fanstasy world where there is a god watching over you? and where every thing has a meaning? Christians to me seem delusional. I do have a deep problem with it but I can see the physcological need for religion for people. because for some with out the idea of religion the world would seem a cold pointless place.
The defination of was is true and what is real is some times a blurry thing. But for some of the first type of troll s for my defination I hate with all my heart. For the second type of troll they don't always have to be wrong about what they believe and could be logically telling it but if there are others who disagree with it in a large enough number then it is considered being a troll for upseting people.
I do find it annoying how people can tell me about how god gets them through life and how they pray to him. But I get in trouble for saying well I wish that were true but sadly there is no god.
Hmmm. Ok maybe I have brought up a topic my self that i shouldn't have but there its out in the open now why I never post in the Religion and Polictics forum.
the main reason why anybody ever calls the customer service line for a company, is when they have taken offense, or has a problem.
meaning;
what is heard the most from people is their complaints.
unfortunately, people do not make it their habit to go out of their way to show support for others, or give them any type of public acclaim. This is generally done face to face.
Errr,
But i do. i have made countless threads giving people public kudos for things i find admiring about them. i have zero problems speaking my version of how i see things.
i don't feel that i am making myself appear less than, in others opinions if i express awe in someone elses abilities, in a public manner, and in instances where i feel less than in comparison.
Intent.
Trolling first is, all about intent.
secondly, its about others pwerceptions

i say this but i want people to think i mean this. Simple disclaimer does not defeat the fact that your fear of the second type of troll is controlling.
I personally think that people are opinionated, which is fine. They hold their opinions based on their own lives experiences. Which cannot be subterfuged. based on that and how it relates to perceptions of others.
Who knows?
