Hopefully I am posting this in the right section :?

I was wondering if anyone could tell me how you can tell if you are hyper or hypo sensitive. I think I may be somewhere in the middle :?

On one hand certain types of lighting (fluorescents) can be anywhere from mildly annoying-painful & noises like fire alarms especially can be really painful (I have stuck my fingers in my ears to prevent the pre-passing out sensations). Some of this may be stress triggered though.
On the other hand I can read, work on the computer, etc. easily in the dark (mom thinks its bad ) & I sometimes cannot hear what people say to me & I have to turn certain audio recordings up (like on youtube) depending on their pitch or (I'm guessing the way they were recorded).
I like deep pressure but any form of casual contact causes mild discomfort-panic attacks (not fun to explain).
My sense of smell (what I like/dislike & notice) its just...odd
Most foods have very little taste to me (except chocolate & a few other things). My issues with food are usually to do with texture & smell.

Any ideas?

It took me a long time to figure out what was going on. I couldn't understand how other people could not be bothered by some of the sounds and lighting that drove me bugnuts. I also thought many of the people around me were just kind of wussy when they complained about things that never bothered me hurting them. It took decades for me to figure out that it wasn't other people's reactions that were off, but my own.

When I feel up, usually hyper. When I feel down, usually hypo.

I am so hypersensitive and so is my daughter. Light bothers us so much that we have dark, thick curtains over our windows and we have to wear shades in places that have florescent lights. We are extremely sensitive to noise, too, and fabric. I never get comfortable in my bra. It is a constant irritation. We both can only wear certain clothes. She can't wear socks, or shorts, or dresses. She only eats about 3 things.

We can't deal with crowds, especially her. It really impacts our lives.

Certain food textures and tastes will make me gag. I can't physically make myself swallow certain foods like eggs or thin spaghetti because they cause a very very strong gag reflex.

Certain textures and sensations feel unbearable, like silk, or wool, or the feel of dust or oil on my skin.

Certain sounds, like high-pitched sounds, are so horrible they immediately cause me to have a horrible headache. Whirring sounds like fans are maddening.

Perfumes, air fresheners, flowers, cleaning liquids and sprays almost always smell much much too strong to the point where it feels like I can't breathe.

Certain types of light are too intense, like fluorescent bulbs, many LED lights, and direct sunlight.

It's combo for me. For my ears, I can't stand loud noises if they go on for a period of time. Like today I was in the choir and because of the organ and drums being so loud I spaced out every two seconds.

For smells I smell things others don't, and I don't smell things that others do. Like I can smell raw tomatoes even if they're not cut, but my family can't.

For my hands... can't have anything on my hands except lotion. they have to be smooth even if I'm using clay, the colors and texture is unbearable. I guess I have to keep everything I use to be the way it is originally. Same position, same color, same texture. If Someone pricks me or touches my body the feeling irritates me--irritates me to the point where I have to rub the spot to counter the feeling.

Except for the sun, lights don't bother me.

As for tastes, mosts foods are unbearable. If a pitcher of lemonade's left unwrapped in the refrigerator and a container of meat left unwrapped is in their too, the smeel of meat spreads around the room. When I get the pitcher out and drink it, I get the taste of meat and lemonade. Not a good combination. I only eat few foods, especially meat, and some textures do cause me to spit the food out. I can't eat chicken if I feel a ligament, or back then I wouldn't eat the fat of the bacon. The texture made me spit it out.

I'm very hypersensitive to touch, taste, sound and light.

I think you prefer to read in the dark because that little bit of light doesn't bother you. I just have a lamp in my room which gives me enough light to see but not a huge amount that it bothers me or makes me dizzy.

I was a bit hyposensitive to heat and cold when I was younger, but now that too I am very sensitive to.
