While I don't wish to bias the poll, I prefer cats.

When I was younger, it was cats.
Now, I'm more inclined towards dogs, though I wouldn't have either as a pet. I'd rather have no pets at all.

Neither! Dogs bark suddenly, stink, and drool all over and these things bother me a lot. A cat would eat my bird. Both like to poop and pee on the floor!

I have had cats all of my life, and they never pooped or peed on the floor. Cats, especially, are clean by nature, and would prefer to use a litter box, or go out of doors. Maybe you've had bad experiences with them? I know some cats will stop using their box if the brand of litter being used disagrees with them, or they get upset about something.

Both my dog and cat are house trained.

I'm not sure.
I love playing rough with my dog and chasing/being chased by her.
I also love just sitting outside and then my cat will nuzzle up to me and I'll stroke his head.
Around dinner time they are equally annoying.

I'm a dog person.

I prefer types that behave closer to their wilder ancestors when they're around you, i.e., very pack orientated, protective, "wild", guarding, etcetera, etcetera.

Its interesting the way that so many autistics like cats, when I saw this question on a NT forum the results were 100% dog.

I'm sure that's an anomaly, in the real world it's not just we who like cats.

That said, I like cats for sort of "autistic" reasons - they're very clean, they're generally not noisy, they are somewhat aloof, etc.

Dogs are overbearingly friendly, they make messes, etc.

Also I had a very, very strong childhood phobia of dogs that I am only sort-of over.

Sounds more like the bigger dog breeds, like a foxhound.

Although my little yappy jack russell can be very protective of my house.

Yep, my dog gets on my nerves more than my cat. He (the cat) can be very loud sometimes though. My dog is like an ADHD child and constantly wants my attention, my cat I only see if I go outside and he's sitting at the same spot, unless it's time for him to eat.
Actually my cat has a feeding routine: meow as loud as he can, eat, meow loudly again to be let out the back door (he will not go out the front door) and he waits for the dog to go inside.
