Is this an autistic trait? I just realized the other day that for as long as I can remember, I have to plug my ears every time I flush the toilet because the noise (especially the loud or sudden flushing ones) make me jolt and my heart beats out of my chest and I feel like I can't breathe and I almost start crying. I guess I never realized it was a weird thing until I told my husband about it and he thought it was weird. Is it weird? Does anyone else get terrible anxiety when a toilet flushes because it's loud? It legitimately frightens me! 8O

i have a jolt reaction to the automatic flush ones, because even though i KNOW the flush is coming, i don't know exactly when.
when i can control the flush it's not a problem.

i think it is an autistic trait to some extent but you are an extreme case!

Some toilet flushing noises aren't just loud, but weird. One automatic flush public toilet made a noise like a cat meowing.

Be glad you were never around me on April Fool's Day.
I've been known to record the sound of a toilet flushing
and anonymously play it back in various unexpected locations ... :P

Sensory sensitivities is a diagnostic criterion for autism. Sensitivities to certain sounds are common for people on the spectrum.

Toilets flushing don't scare me, they overwhelm me and make me angry because they're so loud. I really hate the automatic ones, because they don't give you a chance to prepare for them, and sometimes they go off more than once. When I'm in a crowded bathroom with multiple automatic toilets flushing one right after the other, and I'm trapped in the stall covering my ears, it infuriates me and I start hitting myself. Don't even get me started on those godawful automatic hand dryers!

Me too! Normal toilets aren't as bad but automatic toilets sound like portals to hell! Actually, Jaiden Animations did a hilarious video about it and other irrational fears: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-r_o0wj_Sk (Warning: volume)
I think it might have something to do with the echoey environment of bathrooms, since they're 99% hard tile. Can't exactly have a carpet in a bathroom, that would be gross.

I'm glad we don't have automatic toilets in this country.

My sister's first bought house had carpet in the bathroom AND toilet. Before she lived there, an old British couple owned the house. Maybe that explains it.

When I was around 7 I developed an irrational fear of toilet flushes. Our family were living in a rental while our house was being built. The rental's toilet was almost obnoxious in how loud it was. It scared me so I used to hold my bladder and bowel until I absolutely had to go.

It helped when we moved into our newly built house that the toilet flush there was very quiet. But even now, some toilet flushes bother me.

I hate the automatic flush toilets that are used in public these days. They're so LOUD!

The sound of a flushing toilet doesn't bother me, but I have leapt away from it ever since I learned that flushing toilets can give off aerosol particles. I'm OCD ish about hygiene.

Always cover my ears when I hear a toilet being flushed. Had minor meltdowns as kid in public washrooms.

Exactly. Toilet flushing drives me crazy - and it drives other people crazy that I don't flush it unless I have to.
I don't even know what an automatic toilet is. It flushes for you? Isn't that a bit risky?

I don't know if it's risky, but it's frightening! Especially if you're still sitting on the toilet when it goes WHOOSH!! ! I almost cry when it does that... and then I have to put pressure on myself to calm myself down... it's terrible. You're very lucky you don't have them.

f*****g hell I couldn't be doing with that. I want the toilets to be predictable, not just flushing whenever.
