What is APD? I have ADD and Discalculia. I think it's common for those with AS to have additional cognitive problems. I understand your eagerness for a response (I can be the same way) but sometimes it can take a little while. Since this is a global community some are still fast asleep. :)

Hi there

What are these things? I have never heard of them - my son has Aspergers and he was also born with chromosomal abnormalities (but the doctor says that they wont affect him and there are too many to list).

We are still learning all about this so any clues would be great.

I have NVLD and have been diagnosed with dyscalculia and dyslexia in educational settings where the clinician is only looking for one of those things, but NVLD more correctly explains all of the various problems I have than separate diagnoses.

They're all on my diagnostic shooping list and just yesterday I ordered a copy of the book "When The Brain Can't Hear", which is about Auditory Processing Disorder

Yes, I think. I have mild APD, dyslexia and an average amount of dyscalculia and AS. As well as SAD and SID.

I am either AS or PDD-NOS..not sure...AND.....I have very slight Dyslexia...main symptom is difficulty determining left from right and if I see words printed backwards, it takes me a moment to notice...my dyslexia is not severe....AND I have Dyscalculea and APD....

but I have no tips on how to handle these things...you just live...

My advice is not to stress out if you make mistakes because of those conditions. I always say something embarrassing, give wrong answers to maths questions, hear thing incorrectly and misspell all the time.
The best thing to do is just laugh it off. 'Oh what a silly mistake to make, silly aspie Shanti.' Otherwise I'd just be really down all the time.

i agree with penseive that the best you can do when you make mistakes is let them go. of course that's easier said than done. (i have considerable trouble forgiving my shortcomings.)

it's hard to give advice without a bit more information to go on. if you're currently in high school or college and are "out" then i would imagine you're already working on ways to deal with these factors. if not, i would hope that you can find a way to comfortably receive the concessions you need. dyslexia and dyscalculia have such a profound effect academically that they shouldn't be ignored.

my AS has been more a benefit than a hinderance academically, though not socially of course, and it is dyscalculia that provided all my academic drama. the only class i ever truly suffered through was math and that could have been avoided if i had been less embarrassed by my inability to understand mathematical concepts and more able to self-advocate. things like extra time on tests, the opportunity to take classes with a slower pace, or even outright exemption from certain classes would have really helped. instead my self-esteem took regular blows at the hands of my math teachers.

i'm lucky enough that at the graduate and doctoral level i wont be faced with the same issues but if i had the opportunity to change what's already in the past, i would address those needs i never had met from elementary all the way through post-secondary.
