My entire life I've preferred the company of cats to humans. I can understand them, they understand me, we get along quite nicely. Plus there's the whole cute and cuddly thing. I've often been teased or shunned because of this, but it seems perfectly fine to me - if I'd rather spend my time at an animal shelter than a party, what's it to anyone else? I've been called crazy more than once because I'm so close to my cats  They are my babies and my best friends. What's so weird about liking animals so much?? Has anyone else received negative responses from other people about your love of animals, or your own companions in particular? Does anyone know WHY this is seen as a negative thing?

I probably am destined to become a "crazy cat lady" though

I was more upset when pets died (even a fish - a guppy I think) than when relatives did. Then again I hadn't learned how to cope with autism at that time, so it's a definite factor.

Agreed. One of my cats is in my lap as I write this. No humans in sight.

One of my girls is on the couch next to me right now, sucking on her blankie and purring. What a cutie!

Nothing wrong with that. I've lived with cats almost my whole life, and I find them to be much more personable and honest. If the cat doesn't like you, you'll know about it! They won't be hypocrites. They're incredibly affecttionate and very empathic.

I can't have cats where I live now, and I miss the company, and the little noises... the conversation... the warmth at night.

You're making me miss my cat.
I also prefer the company of animals to people, but there are still times I don't even want the company of animals.

I've never gotten any negative responses about it. Though sometimes people have teased me about visiting them to see their pets and not them.

People probably give you that negativity for the wrong reasons, but based upon your christening them as your 'babies', I feel I must warn you that (ESPECIALLY with women who have never raised a child) expessing paternal/maternal emotions with an animal as if they were human is not healthy for either the animal, or the human.

English Mastiff. :D Best companion anyone can have. :D I usually rest with him on the floor when I need to socialize with something, his snoring is so relaxing.

I don't treat them like human babies, I just pamper them and love them as family members. I don't see anything wrong with that.

I love animals, always have, always will. My entire life I’ve had enormous empathy and compassion for animals. Pets are family same as biological family, I love them as much. I miss them equally when they die as I did my maternal grandparents when they passed away.

My mother once had a colleague who talked about her pets (dogs) and said that she loved them like her kids. One of the others had snorted and said: “So you don’t have any kids.”
“No, I only have 4,” the animal lover answered.

Those who don’t get it, simply don’t. Who cares what they think?

I once thought I had a friend. When my first dog died 12 ½ years ago, I called her a few months later and needed to talk. I told her my dog had died. She asked me if I wanted to get another one. I told her I didn’t know, that it was too early to think about that. The b**** giggled and said: “You make it sound like you’re talking about a boyfriend!”
That one sentence effectively killed my feelings for her. I'm not even angry, I'm completely through with her. I’ve seen her a few times afterwards but I have nothing to say to that hag. I will never forgive her, and I would never want a friend who doesn’t cherish animals. Forget it!

I can become attached to animals really easily as well. In fact, when my cat died last winter, I think I broke down and cried harder than I ever did in my life. But to answer your question, no. I don't remember anyone really thinking of me as weird for that. They've only thought of me as weird for too many other reasons

I am already referred to as "crazy cat lady" by my family. I have three cats (and a couple dogs). I have always preferred the company of animals to people. I completely broke down when my dog of 10 years had to be put down due to a brain tumor, and yet I have had several family members die without eliciting any emotional response from me.

I prefer the company of cats to humans. They're much more fun and relaxing to be around.
