I think that a reason why someone may suppose they have Asperger's Syndrome is if they show habits. Some examples of these are poor time management skills, and failure to maintain a relationship. I have demonstrated that I have had these habits a lot, especially this week. I think these habits seem to kick in at school. I feel the need to make alternate plans to my school schedule quite often. I also feel that sometimes, I really like someone, and then I don't. By the time I think it is appropriate for me to make up, it is too late. If this happens, I over-react a lot. Asperger's Syndrome must be a disorder in which people make a lot of social faux pauses. I can't imagine going through any day without talking to anyone. Does anyone agree with me?

To be perfectly honest, there have been times when I've gone well over a week without speaking to another person. Social isolation never particularly bothered me very much, although I became somewhat lonely after several years of it.

I over-react socially, unsure of what is really meant and with no 'antennae' to tell me whether people like or dislike me, whether they mean well or harm...what else can ya do? if you underreact people hate that too, in fact it seems to attract aggressive behaviour. I can understand how overreaction is inappropriate and wierd but that's not something I have any choice about.

I often go for a week without talking to anyone except the checkout person at the supermarket....I was much more social when I was younger but now I've mostly given up. I have a lovely dog and she keeps me company. I also have some chronic fatigue type problems, like absolutely no ability to deal with stress, or being sent into a mental fog by stress, so all in all, I lead a quiet life.

letsgoblues:

Yes, I am more partial to women than men. However, I have been able to maintain social relationships with males themselves. An action like that grew on me. All it took was some reflection (meaning remembering) of worse prior situations. My conscience told me to keep an open mind, and I was listening to it. Unbeknownst to some of you, this brings up another habit. Not giving someone else a chance in a social relationship is also not good.

I can go long periods of time a lot not talking to anyone else of course, being a parent now that makes it very hard. But I can live without talking to others just as easily I can deal with talking to others as long as they will listen to me. :)

Yes, I either overreact or underreact. Often, I overreact when someone is joking and I take them seriously. More often, however, I underreact. As others have said, this attracts aggressive behavior in others, seeking to get a "rise" out of passive people like myself. It's quite irritating, especially when they do not confront me directly, but play games or become passive-aggressive.

Yes, I commit many social faux-paus.

I do go through days in which I don't speak to anyone, but it's very rare, as I'm at school, so I will at least say "hi" to my apartment mates if I see them.

I would love to be able to go through life without speaking to anyone. I am afflicted by "loneliness", but interacting with humans only accentuates my loneliness as it is painfully demonstrated how mentally isolated I really am. Mere talking does not assuage loneliness of mind.

AS seems to manifest itself in different ways... mainly due the difference in underlying thinking structure... but the ways it manifests itself are related to one another.
For example... having a restricted interest in a hobby, is somewhat the same as being really fixated or "obsessive" about certain people.

I can spend very long periods of time without talking to anyone. I was in a situation where I moved to a new town (I'm in another situation like that now, because I'm going to university) and would spend months without having a conversation with anyone. Not that I really... actively decided to stay away from people... I'm just really really bad at talking to people :)

I am kind of OCD as well...I never throw ANYTHING away (I usually can't see my bedroom floor) and I've obsessed over things since I was a kid. I also have a lot of routines when I'm at school...I like to go to the same places at the same times everyday. I discovered that a lot of what I used to consider my bad habits, like rubbing my hands together and swinging my legs, are actually stims. As far as people go, I'm a walking social faux paux!! ! I will say things that are rude (unintentionally...usually), obvious or just plain stupid, and I don't like how people react to it-usually by ignoring me. And then they sort of adopt this patronizing tone, like I'm seven years old and I hate it. When I'm around people I don't know well I usually just wait till I have something good to say before opening my big mouth. But I am pretty opinionated so sometimes I just jump in anyway.

I know what you mean by this...I haven't been able to find many people to relate to lately and feel like an alien at times. Most of my talking nowadays is to my family and occasionally members of my extracirricular club; my friends are away at different schools so we usually e-mail each other although I love hearing from them. Must be why I "talk" so much here (which I apologize for b/c I'm probably a bore!)

Then I guess you could understand how I felt when my parents told me that they were kicking me out of my room and moving me into the basement, and that I'd have to get rid of my collection of dead electronic circuit boards which occupied the better part of two rubermaid roughneck containers.

I've been lucky enough to find at least one person here on campus who I can talk to about stuff and who I can be myself around this person with out fear of reprisal and rejection. Otherwise I would have been alone here in oshkosh, isolated both emotionally, and socially.

I've felt like and alien here on earth for a very long time.
