Topomax affects different people differently. I went crazy on it, but it helps some people. My dad's psychiatrist says it makes you "skinny and stupid." It's an anticonvulsant, but also used as a mood stabilizer. Most anticonvulsants are also used as mood stabilizers. CrazyMeds is a good place to find info on medication. http://www.crazymeds.us/topamax.html is their article specifically on Topamax. The site uses frames, though, so is better to go to the main site and click the link to the Topamax article in the left frame, it's easier to navigate around the different articles that way.

Temple Grandin in her book "Thinking in Pictures" also points out that many autists are very sensitive to medication and may do BETTER on sub-therapeutic doses... she herself takes one of her meds at half strength every other day rather than daily and it's what works for her... so use your son's response as the guage of effectiveness rather than some theoretical number rec'd in literature.

Topamac is a strange drug. I took it for awhile. When my dosage was upped the first time, I had horrible hand aches (among other things) but my doc upped my dose again and the hand pains went away. I do not understand how dosage affects this drug... your son isn't necessarily taking too much, but it certainly sounds as though he is not taking the right amount for him. Like Maggiedoll, I had a horrible time on this drug, but have heard good reports on it from others. She is right... check out that site... hell, google topamac, there are even message boards for people taking that drug... lots of good info out there.

I was taking it for a while, and it did nothing to me one way or another.
