So anyways last night, my roomate goes out to a party. He gets back at 2am reeking of beer and cheap tobacco, I'm in bed trying to fall asleep. What does he do????

Turns on the lights in my room, puts on his radio and starts to balance his checkbook!

This one really takes the cake. It really does, this is worse than the time he came it at 4am the sunday after thanksgiving, turned the lights on and started to put all of his clothes away and make his bed.

This is even worse than the time he left the window to my room open during a rain/wind storm getting my computer all wet, WITH HIM IN THE ROOM!! (and it was him who opened the window to begin with)

This even beats all those muggy nights in september where he would crank up my fan full blast before going to bed, sending every loose piece of paper flying about.

And I've told him, time and time again, that I can't sleep with lights and noise. It doesn't even pay trying to talk to him about it, he don't listen!

In all fairness, he was probably extremely drunk. Why else would he try balancing his checkbook at 2 AM? I don't think he was actively trying to piss you off, at least not in this particular situation.

No, just incredibly absent minded. Did I also mention he slams the door at night when he comes in. Did I also mention he once tried to use my computer with out asking me? (login password stopped him) Did I mention that I once un-did all the lights on his side of the room to give him the impression I don't want him turning lights on at 2am. Did I also mention that our roomate agreement specificly states a time in which all lights must be off if one or the other is trying to sleep, which is 12am, a policy which could get him in trouble if I reported him to the floor boss, which I haven't becasue I'm too nice.

You should report him for his own good. :)

He isn't one of those types who is always asking to "lend" (and never return) your possessions?

I had one of those but he rarely asked just took and not just for himself if anybody asked him for anything he'd give them mine last beer, last soda, sweatshirts, lighters, tapes, anything. Drove me nuts.

I had a roommate who was a Britney Spears fan and played her music constantly. She hung up two huge posters of said silicone-enhanced individual attempting to look sexy.

On the positive side, my therapist says the constant flashbacks may one day end.

Wow, by the sounds of it your housemate is incredibly thoughtless and you seem to put up with it much better than I ever would. When I was at uni, during my first year, I had this one flatmate who would come back at stupid o clock and slam doors, take drugs that used to stink the flat out, setting off the smoke alarms etc and she always used to do this when I had to get up early the next morning. She was that loud that the people in the flat below and above us could hear her. I'm no killjoy or anything as I can be a bit of a party animal myself but I am actually able to take others needs into consideration. Needless to say I didnt get on with her and me and another flatmate told her about her loudness and in the end we reported her. Then she stopped doing it because otherwise she got told she'd be kicked out. Result, so stop being too nice otherwise you'll continue to suffer and why should you?

Hmmmm?

A couple of questions? Does he bully you? If not
there is no reason to keep your silence on him about
his behaviour and violaton of the "floor boss" rules.

Also.....Hows your computer?

If he is distractive, destructive, insensitive, and many other
things that don't come to mind....He deserves reporting.

HMmmmmm?

How has this affected you school work? I don't know how this
is affecting your current school year?

Hmmmmm?

Sincerely,
Ghosthunter

When I was a child I had bad energy habits (like leaving the light on when I left a room or not closing the doors tight when it was cold out). My mother nagged at me until the energy conservation rules became very firmly entrenched, and now when my roomie leaves a light on it drives me crazy.

I can certainly sympathise about the lights, the noise and the smell and I just hate having sleep interrupted for any reason. If it's the policy for lights out at a certain time, I would point that out to the guy and report him if he kept doing it. I think he should at least get a couple of warnings.

But I personally hate muggy rooms and like lots of ventilation and a fan when it is hot and stuffy. Is it possible to put paperweights on your papers so they won't fly around the room while the fan is on? I wouldn't leave a window open so rain would go on the computer though.

If it gets really bad, is it possible to ask for a different room-mate? Surely there must be cases where 2 people find it impossible to put up with each other? Good luck, anyway.

I'd hate to have a roomie who smokes as smoking stinks the place out. And if they farted and smoked, that would be even worse. I suppose you could retaliate with air freshener sprays.

If you mention this to your dorm's floor boss and disciplinary action is taken against your roomate, bear in mind that you still have to live with your roomate, and any disciplinary action taken against him can ultimately fall back on you. --In short, you're still stuck living with someone that may use such an incident to hold a grudge against you.

If he's causing you a lot of grief, I wouldn't hold out against using a more overt method against him, such as a very loud, and very angry confrontation, preferably when he comes in late at night. --Make it loud enough for other people to notice and get involved.

If you do this, there is the remote chance that this will open yourself to disciplinary action as well, however when the dorm's administration finds out what is going on, (Be diligent at cataloging his infractions) any complaints made against you will most likely be cancelled out by the cumulative effect of what you've had to put up with for the past several months.

Bear in mind, I'm NOT telling you to utilise this plan of action, it's merely a strategy to think about utilising should your roomate continue to be an inconsiderate a--hole.

Stays up til five pretty much fully realizing that I cant go to sleep with the light on in my room and with him making noise (he only did that once) and coming in seeing me in bed taking a nap (which are generally neccessary for me as I only get like 5-7 hours at night) and then turning on the radio (on low granted) and the light to do his hw in the room when he could just as easily do it in the library or anywhere where Im not sleeping!
