I expect this has been the subject of 200 previous threads, so I will understand if this one gets to page 71 in less than 4 minutes but............

WHAT THE HECK IS THAT GUY?

I only really set up the poll as a way to help me to think up a few categories, none of which really explain him.

I am pretty sure that the answer is not one of the options

Any thoughts?

I won't be setting up any more polls...............until my next one

What symptoms of psychosis do you see in him?

Just the typical British psychosis. He can't help it.

I find it hilarious that I am the third person to vote and also the third person to say "just British."

Mr Bean is the father of a guy that works in a local pizza shop. My mother pointed him out when we were there. I said, "That guy? Really? I don't really see the OH MY GOD." Same eyebrows, skin tone. Creepy.

He's just a child in a man's body. The movie destroyed it somewhat as the character is not really supposed to speak. That was how he was developed. There are some clips prior to the first series of Mr. Bean, where Rowan Atkinson was experimenting with a silent character to see how it plays off.

I voted "train spotter" since that is the one which indicates a British eccentric. I did not vote "just British" since not all Brits are eccentric. He does have some AS traits, but I think that Rowan Atkinson did not intend to depict an Aspie.

I voted psychotic. Some say he has AS traits but I don't think that was intentional.

Mr. Bean is, imo, an attempt to tap into the Shadow of the British (and other cultures too). Everything he does, everyone else does or would do, if we are honest with ourselves and admit it. The Shadow is that part of us that we know we have but we don't look at and prefer to pretend we haven't seen. Especially the British, disown this part of themselves very much in favor of a public acceptable, polite self that, in the end, does little except alienate people from self and others.

Eg: in the first movie, Mr. Bean is tremendously lucky and gets a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to fly first class. When he passes the 2nd. class, he waves his ticket at the passengers with a "ha! I'm a winner and you're all losers!" gesture. If a person is honest with themselves, we'll most agree that we'd like to do that too, but we don't do it, due to social constraints and due to our own moral values, which don't allow us.

What makes people, especially the British, laugh so much is the sudden exposure by Mr. Bean of all those things we thought happened only to us and we had them well-hidden from everyone else.

Aspies tend to do something similar to NTs by saying the king is nude and not white-lying, but since it's not a movie but real life, we put people off rather than make them laugh heartily.

I think Rowan Atkinson bases the character on Jacques Tati

but you are right Keith about the not speaking-it's not as funny if he's verbal

It's early days yet but 'Just British' and AS are running neck and neck in the poll at the moment.

I actually voted for Arnie's twin. Danny DeVito's character was actually far too likeable to have been the 'crap' that was taken out of Julius (yes I remember the name) who was Arnie's character.

Although the thought of a visit to Britain/England causes me unsettled feelings and perhaps mild anxiety, I would have to agree that they aren't all like that......mostly............but not all :)

I was tempted to vote 'trainspotter' but I dont know enough about them and in any case aren't they a bit 'sociable' at least when they eat their sandwiches together and 'share' train numbers :?:

Per Lorna Wing (again, the one who defined what AS is today):

Quote:
Asperger wrote his first paper about the pattern of behaviour, now known as Asperger's syndrome, in 1944. His work did not become widely known throughout the world until the 1980s. It may seem that his syndrome must be a new condition appearing for the first time in the 20th century. However, the fact is that there have always been people with this syndrome, although of course no one would have been given this diagnosis until comparatively recently. Accounts of such individuals can be found in historical documents, in fiction, and on television - Mr Bean is a perfect example.
