It seems that I'm constantly hearing things wrong... and I think that is because I almost constantly have my focus/attention on what I am interested in and am actually paying a lot less attention to other things than I realize at times. Not so much with people, but my kiddos have the TV on quite a bit, and I catch bits and pieces all day long of course. Or if someone is just talking in the background and it doesn't involve me, then they are just background noise.

It seems though, that when I do "tune in" and hear something wrong, I always hear the worst possible thing!

My daughter is watching Max and Ruby and I could have sworn that Ruby just told her brother Max to "Go play with your f---in' ducks!"

My boyfriend was talking to a friend of his on the phone once and I thought he said something about wanting to dress like a hooker.

Luckily, these things give me a lot to laugh about after I hear it wrong, unfortunately even if someone corrects it, I cannot always quit giggling because of what I "heard" first, and people get frustrated with me when I can't stop laughing.

Oh, I don't just hear things wrong, I see things wrong!

In a movie, there was this spinning sign that said 'hotel'. I thought it said 'b***h'. 8O

As for hearing things wrong, one time I heard the theme song for 'Dudley the dragon' and I thought I heard 'CAN YA SWEAR LIKE A DRAGON?! f*^&%%%!'

Another time my friends were talking about adoption, I thought they said 'abortion'. I ended up blurting' WHOSE HAVING AN ABORTION?! :(' so loud that everyone in the hallway heard!

Roflmao! Can ya swear like a dragon... that would be such a funny song, lol. I do that with signs and stuff too, but haven't seen anything recent enough to really remember it well, or it just wasn't funny enough or "off" enough to retain.

Hmmm... makes me wonder just how many parodies of songs were things someone just heard wrong and went with.

Yeah, especially some of the 'Weird Al' ones('My bologna'). 8O

Sounds like a profitable business for people like us...

I am reminded of Gilda Radner's Emily Latella character from the early days of Saturday Night Live - a little old lady who would come on Weekend Update to respond to some imaginary News commentary that she had obviously misheard due to her near-deafness.

"I don't understand what the big deal is about hearing themes wrong. As long as you can see the opening credits and you know what show you're watching, who cares whether or not you recognize the theme song?

"Now if you're giving a talk in class and your teacher hears themes wrong, then that could get you in a lot of trouble - you might have written a paper on Gaucho Pants and she might think you're talking about flatulence - teachers don't take kindly to students who write essays on farting...what's that? Oh...hearing THINGS wrong...well...that's different, isn't it?

Never mind."

:D Miss you, Gilda...

It is indeed auditory processing disorder. Basically we all hear things louder so whereas my non AS buddy (I ain't got one...) might be able to focus on just the conversation, I would be hearing traffic, pipes in walls, birds, other conversations etc. I hear things wrong all the time. It's really embarassing sometimes...

I do this too. That's why I like closed captioning for movies.

In a Nat King Cole song, I used to think it was "I saw three sh!ts come sailing in" instead of ships.

I have difficulty time understanding music.

But I always wonder what is the difference between normal people having this issue and people with APD having it. I have also seen people who can't understand words to a song or understand what a character had said in the movie or needs someone to repeat what they said to them. I guess everyone has it. :?

Perhaps it is simply just more common for us to have it than them? I know people who have to ask "what" at times, but it seems that I just hear a lot more wrong than they do. My boyfriend will ask "what" sometimes if I say something confusing, of course, or if he's paying attention to something else, but when talking directly to me he is very involved in the conversation and doesn't have to ask much at all.... whereas I have to ask twice as much as before when I'm trying to pay attention to what he is saying, or else he just gets a blank stare.

 Reminds me of an incident from my childhood - there used to be a segment on The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show featuring a canine scientist named Mr Peabody, which I COULD NOT hear as anything but Mister Pee Potty. My mother thought I was just being intentionally silly and naughty and washed my mouth out with soap, but I seriously believed that was the dog's name.

I do this all the time. And sometimes I hear familiar words as totally new, and don't know what they mean.

For those of you in the USA, you'll understand what I mean when I say that as a kid I thought the National Anthem started with "Oh say can you see, by the daunserly light...." I didn't know exactly what "daunserly" light was, but it sounded kinda cool, so I was willing to go with it. Eventually I got ridiculed, and my mistake was pointed out to me.

I things wrong all the time and it can be hilarious. Sometimes when I'm done laughing I can figure out what the person probably meant to say but other times I will have to ask. I also have very hard time understanding songs and sometimes movies with bad sound quality. Most of the time when I go see lyrics for a song I see that I had at least 50% of the words wrong... That mostly happens with rock type of music.

Occasionally I will hear things wrong, but not all the time. However, on occasions I will not hear things at all, usually due to headphones.
