It seems I do not get a lot of humour on this site, or any others for that matter. :(. Well rather, I am quite slow at it. I'm less slow in real life, since i can usually tell by someone's intonations or smile.
Aren't aspies the opposite? I am always questioning whether I qualify or not.

You're right, they can have trouble with it in real life. I'm weird that way too. I'll get the humour or sarcasm, metaphor, turn of phrase, whatever straight away and a few seconds later my mind starts thinking about what I woulda heard if I HAD taken it literally! Maybe I have half the disorder, I dunno!

As for not getting it when reading, I dunno, could be a problem with your attention span or reading speed. Or maybe everyone has the same problem. Online it's difficult cos you can't convey tone, that's a main cause of flame wars- someone says something that gets taken the wrong way and on it goes.

What kinda stuff are you missing?

Being slow is better than not understanding.

To be fair, I would say it's the more advanced humour that may be harder to understand. It might help to use it more often therefore speeding up your reactions as you associate fixed words quickly into humour.

Sometimes a smiley can help with a joke or something. But I find that UPPER CASE = shouting and offensive or abusive

that's why i use smileys so much, because i dont want people to be confused like me. :P

I think even in real life you'd have to know some people really well before you know they are being ironic about something. What would a sarcasm emoticon look like, I wonder? :)

I use upper case to really EMPHASISE a word!

I too find it hard to see sarcasm in books unless it says 'bla bla said sarcasticly' or something. I'm not too bad in real life but I too am a bit slow on the ol' uptake!

i THINK it's FUNNY when people rely SOLELY on CAPITALIZATION to EMPHASISE.

I like this idea of using two smiley faces to connotate sarcasm . . .

I was curious if there was a site where you could design your own emoticon, and there are some.

It's harder to see humor and sarcasm online. I can see sarcasm on here or humor and I am sure I miss it too. I know I have missed sarcasm online before because someone would tell me that person was being sarcastic.

Yes but HOW ELSE do you show emphasis on a WEBSITE!?

(I'm doing it a bit on purpose now..!)

I reguarly embarrass myself on message boards when I miss implied sarcasm. On a left-wing political board I frequent (Democratic Underground) I often stick my foot in my mouth, taking sarcasm and satire to trolling.

I get sarcasm on text if I know what the poster's like. Otherwise I don't pick up on it unless it's obvious.

It seems to me if you are trying to convey sarcasm by written word you have to say something ridiculous. If it could be taken seriously it won't work. Here's an example of something that obviously didn't work, at least to some.
