Worst thing my manager has ever said to me

I hate travelling by public transport alone as im sure most of you can relate!

I had an interview which meant travelling. As I refuse to travel by train or coach the only alternative was a hire car (the company pays so its needs to be authorised). The thought of spending 2-3 hours, potentially crammed with strangers and nowhere to hide or run away to was terrifying.

Halfway through making plans, which were not very straight forward, my manager says to me 'Why cant you take the train like normal people'!

As you can imagine I was quite shocked at this statement... and I honestly beleive he was not even aware of what he had just said. Regardess to say, I pointed out his comment of error to which he apologised and the hire car was approved.

The ignorance of some people... is astounding!

It wasn't very professional of him, but I don't really blame him to be honest; I would be frustrated too if I had to go completely out off my way for one employee.

Why don't you pay for your own private transport?

Even none aspies can say innaproppiate things. To him you were being irrational and couldn't understand why you couldn't take the train and making it all hard for yourself. I also get irritated when people do those kind of things.

If that's the worst thing your manager has ever said to you, you are lucky. I had a manager once tell me, "I can't f***ing believe you just said that to me!" It wasn't long after that I found employment elsewhere.

Well I did explain to my manager WHY I couldnt do public transport. I also have a mentor and we are all 'work' friends. Everybody knows I have AS at work - even if they dont really know what that means lol

The company I work for have a new green policy which is basically;

1. Public transport
2. Hire car
3. Personal car.

It dont really make sence to have a hire car above a personal car but thats the rules and as this was work related my only choice was a hire car.

My manager does put his foot in it sometimes - hes very old school - but hes learning

He was probably just frustrated. Usually when people are frustrated, things like that just accidentally pop out! People have done that to me in the past.

If I am expected to travel on behalf of my employer, my employer pays for my reasonable transportation costs.

One of the essential criteria for my particular job is, "willingness and ability to travel." Fortunately, I don't have to much of an issue with public transportation, so I can do it without resorting to a private motor vehicle or rental car. But it would become a bit more difficult if I was medically disabled from some forms of transportation.

As for the manager's remark, it's a poor choice of words, but hopefully it is simply an expression of frustration rather than an unmasked bias.

Dude if I was the boss and wanted to interview your or something, I would literally pick the person up. I'd just figure the person doesn't like sitting next to smelly drunks for hours on end or listen to middle easterners in the taxi's talk about their plans for their life to make money.

I remember one 'manager' (he couldn't manage a p**s up at a brewery) trying to convince me that I needed to 'take work home' with me for the weekend saying;

'we all have to make sacrifices'


He doesn't know how close he came to being sacrificed

That she's afraid of me, and she doesn't want the clients to see me.

You would pick them up? I'm hoping you meant in your car, because the "literally" part is throwing me off, lol.

He was just frustrated. My managers have never said anything that terrible beyond "f*cking <insert last name here>" when I've made a bad blunder. Even so as someone who's had real trouble driving and has taken enough business classes to know how much transportation can cost I can see both sides. He approved the hire so at least he seems like a decent guy.
