Sorry if I upset anyone but it seems my brain doesn't make certain connections most are social which we on the spectrum have an issue with. For example last night on Halloween I wore my Joker mask some guy jumped out of the way and pretended to be scared. I just walked on by (IMO he came off as stupid) my dad said if it was a kid they'd find it funny. I didn't make the connection and thought oh ok whatever. and there are alot of social situations such as jokes that I don't get. I always think perhaps are brains are slower when it comes to understanding jokes/social aspects etc. What are your thoughts and sorry to offend anyone. :-)

I dont think they work slower, just parts of it. Im like that a little bit. eg. Sometimes Ill understand a joke right away but takes me half a sec to make the connection that its funny and start laughing at it. For most people its the other way round (the understanding part takes longer).

Its probably taking longer to understand certain things cos you're going further into your memory rather than the 'usual' part of the brain that that kinda stuff is stored in. Thats a WILD guess by the way as i dont know much about how it all really works!

Our brains are not slower, we just run low priority social processing threads. (Ok that one was bad).

Yes, it takes a bit longer to understand or comprehend some things for us. So our brains maybe slow in that regard. But I pick up on new topics extremely quickly. The gears that work the learning part of the brain are spinning at 48 million RPMS. The gears that process information like you described work at 600 RPMs.

We all have something we are really good at where the mind is really quick. Usually math.

Reacting in a social situation is largely a matter of evaluating the possibilities and preparing ritual responses. Humor is one of those areas where everyone is right and everyone is wrong. To use the OP's example. If you are playing a part, which is largely what Halloween is about, you need to have a couple responses prepared. You're the Joker, memorize a few lines of dialog. They don't even have to be appropriate to the situation, as long as they are actual lines from the movie/comic book. If a person doesn't react to your mask, no big deal. If they do, give them a Joker line.

It takes me a while to process and analyze anything so I'm slower than most to respond to people.
I'd say if our thoughts are slower than most it's only because they are more complex.

To my way of thinking, the few extra milliseconds I take to look at/listen to a person, analyze the cues and formulate a response may make it appear that I am slow to respond, but my brain certainly isn't slower than the next persons. (Probably faster, if anything).

For example,

Erin: Hey, I like your hat.
Lisa: [thinking] A compliment! Scanning for sarcasm... it's clean! Go!

It's not because our brains work slower. It's because the circuits made for social interactions don't work well, so we're compasing by more rationals thinking. Rational thinking is versatible, but quite slow relatively to others parts of brain.

Actually, according to Raven's Progressive Matrices our brains are faster. A metaphorical way to explain this, our social processing software hasn't yet caught up with the new hardware. It could use some updates to improve efficiency, because as of now, the code is crap.

Someone else coined the term "logical detour". I think that could play a roll in it appearing that someone with AS is processing slower sometimes. Extra processing required to figure out if something should be taken literally or not could result in a response that is slower than average, but it's due to extra thinking instead of slower thinking. This is highly situational though.

I dunno, sometimes my brane works pretty fast, but occasionally I get 'lag'. It's like running Halo 3 on a 486.

I think one of the reasons that I might appear to be a slow thinker to some people is that on some topics, especially chit-chat topics, I seem to need to spend extra time inside my head searching for the right words to say.
