Do you ever go upstairs/downstairs/into another room in your home and then forget why you went there, when you get there?

I do this all the time. Infact I just did it.

I'm not sure what exactly causes it, could be Executive Function.

But I have read that this tendency to forget our immediate thoughts is part of the reason why we blurt things out (things which are often out of context).

I know that if I don't say it NOW, I will lose the thought forever.

How about you?

Do you ever find yourself going to another room at home and then trying to figure out why you went there?

Not AS related, most people do this from what I've seen.

Multiple times per day. I've been having "senior moments" since I was in preschool.

Yeah, executive dysfunction is one of the main parts of AS. Also one of the main parts of ADHD and OCD, maybe others.

I only just discovered this fact and i wished i hadnt. Now im gonna be pissed at myself whenever i forget something :(

Recently I thought of something to add to a grocery list, crossed the room to get the list and had forgotten what I was going to write down by then. That quick. My mind is like a steel sieve.

Kinda like walking all over the house looking for the keys
only to realize they are in your hand

Arrgh! I'm famous for that! Searching everywhere, all over the house for an important bit of paper only for my partner to ask "Isn't it the one you have in your hand...?"
Or looking all over the place for my glasses, to have it pointed out that they are on top of my head....
That sort of thing is normal, in my house!

Well then,

Try this one.

I was just about to go out cycling so I filled up my water bottle.

My wife spoke to me and I couldn't remember where my bottle was.

I looked all over the kitchen, living room and was just about to go upstairs to check even though I KNEW I hadn't gone upstairs.

All of a sudden I looked down and there it was...........in my hand.

My cell phone was also in the same hand, underneath the bottle....................

Happens to me all the time, though recently I've made some progress....I just try to calm down and see if the missing element returns to consciousness via a little thought - mentally retracing my steps, pondering what it might have been, that kind of thing. And I strongly suspect the root problem is not memory but attention: usually I seem to forget stuff because I didn't really focus my attention on it first....but getting into the habit of forming a clear, vivid picture of the "item-at-risk" is kind of difficult, because I never seem aware in advance that I'm about to take my attention off it - I think of something, then I get distracted (often by my own non-related thoughts), and the item vanishes :x To make real progress I'll need to learn to recognise those "at risk" moments.

The worst example is when I'm playing my guitar, and I'll put down my plectrum so I can sort out something else, then I can't remember putting the plectrum down. If only I could catch that moment when I put it down, and just say to myself, "that's where I've put it," then I'm sure I'd remember, but it's just like a reflex action, I'm not aware of it till it's too late.

I open up new tabs in my web browser, and I have to type what I need straight away, because if I don't, I'll see the empty tab an hour later and have absolutely no idea what I opened it for. If absent-mindedness could be bottled and sold, I'd be rich.

I get that all the time. I find it to be very annoying.
