I touch things in stores or elsewhere especially when I'm curious about the quality of the item. At other times I might absent mindedly trace the outline of a window or panel.

I used to drive a cab, and I almost always held my pen between my fingers even while driving. Having my pen in my hand helped to keep me from worrying about having to look for it and possibly not finding it whenever I needed it, and it helped me along the line of being confident about my competence (a sense of security) as a cab driver.

Is that the kind of thing you are asking about?

Welcome!

I like spinning phone cords and pens around my fingers. I usually stop when I notice though.

I'm always touching things when walking past them, especially smooth things like glass ornaments.
When sitting watching TV, if I'm wearing a top with a zip up neck I always play with the zip toggle, holding it between finger and thumb and make it click side to side very fast - this may be more of a stim though.

Subject-object topic

I was almost tempted to answer that my feet do so!! Actually, they do sometimes, as i like to practice toe dexterity.

But your question is serious, so I will answer yes. This is a problem for those who have quit smoking, in that they need something to do with their hands. (But I have not smoked in almost thirty years.)

You can hyperfocus on objects that you are holding. Better than navel gazing.

It is almost a compulsive habit... when there is something lying on the table in front of me I just grab it and hold it. It is difficult to control and really annoying. When I was having job interviews I always took a notebook and pen with me or a cup of tea, to avoid playing with things on the table.

Yes, there are many times I do hold, for example, a pencil (mechanical pencil) in my hand when I am at my desk even though I am not intending on using it for awhile. But, I also use the pencil for one of my stims---lightly dragging the end of the pencil along my face and then rubbing the itch off---been doing that for years. When I am sitting on the couch at home I often have a house plan book in my hands.

Yes, I feel lost without having something in my hand.
Usually it is my nicotine inhaler or a pen or somesuch. At restaurants, I hold my cup or fork longer than I need to.. just sitting there with nothing in hand feels uncomfortable.

now that I think about it, I'm always doing something with my hands. I'm either typing or writing or drawing or painting, or cooking or reading, or have the computer mouse in my hand, or holding a mug...and I just quit smoking for the 80th time and it always takes a while to get used to walking without a cigarette. Come to think of it, if I'm not smoking, and I'm walking, I'm holding onto the strap of my messenger bag.

Hands are meant to hold things, are they not?

I almost always have a Blue Pentel Mechanical Pencil or a Zebra Z-Grip ballpoint pen in my left hand. I either am clicking the pen or tapping the end of the eraser of the pencil against the nearest surface. :)
