I was busy getting some orders ready to ship out earlier tonight, and while I was getting the boxes and all that ready, I suddenly started thinking about something regarding my childhood:

I remember individuals who seemed ok by themselves, but when ya invited a few of 'em over to hang with you, they started knockin' ya left and right...and unless they flat-out called you a rude name, they would get away with it, cause ya couldn't prove they were being pricks.

Anyone else have experiences like that?

Yeah, I realize the pricks wanted to be cool around each other...but it's sad that to do that, they thought they had to knock us( or in this case, me).

The creepy thing is one of the people I used to have this issue with...wound up becoming a druggie years later, and was found dead in Mt. Olive, NJ.

Most of the others had addiction problems too.

Their line of logic appeared to be, "I have one, therefore I have to be one."

Yeah, people worry terribly about their "coolness" in high school and earlier.

I helped a class bully with his computer in high school... he became all nice to me and tried to protect me, but when he realized I was laughingstock of the class, he turned his back on me.

I had a similar thing with a friend who stood between us but then got bored and let his buddy punch me in the face "by accident".

I don't miss school. At all.

Luckily as adults, if they do that to us in our own homes, we can kick them out, and if they refuse to leave, charge them with trespassing... :)

I think it's simply a pack mentality.

This didn't happen to me, simply because I didn't have enough of them but I take your point - we're loners like cats and they are more like dogs (pack animals). Intelligent people are happy in their own company because they can find something useful to do with their time but misery and boredom needs company as they say (The Devil makes work for idle 'Hans' and it's not just German boys that are pains in the backside).

I don't mean to be rude, but it's "hands". Goes back in similar form at least to the 18th century and (more vaguely) to Chaucer in the 14th, at least so far as I can find from a quick trawl of the interwebs.

I don't mean to be rude, but perhaps that's why it was in quotes? A play on words, perhaps?

I had a group of boys who would get me to do their computer science work for them, and be nice for a while in return, then call me names like 'prostitute' the rest of the time. I stopped doing their work for them.

I don't miss school either. It was a hell hole.

One of my friends at school had an interesting attitude on this. Whenever he gave me a hard time he said it was to take negative attention from others away from him and turning on me. He told me I could avoid being bullied by people if I chose to victimise someone else so the bullies would turn on that person. I never did.

Did they tell you they were just kidding or were they deliberately being mean to you?
If anyone that calls me a friend is mean to me I have no time for them. My first rule of friendship is "don't be a c**t.

I had friends who were mean to me. One of my best friends said "f**k head" to me and that was how I learned the F word.
