I used to be considered egotistical, full of myself, self absorbed. I worked really hard on it, went too far and became too self-conscious. Then again, I think I was always self conscious and trying to make up for it. Now I think I'm at a good level of confidence without seeming too full of myself. I've asked people and nobody thinks I'm egotistical and I don't feel so self conscious anymore either. It took a while to find a balance, but it's really helped. I believe confidence is the key to successful social skills. You can be awkward and confident and I think you can get away with it. I think my diagnosis helped with my confidence too. Realizing I wasn't slowly going crazy gave more self worth. Anyways, I would like to know how many of you all consider yourself to be confident in every day life?

I used to be confident sometimes, when I felt more normal and like I was fitting in. Now, I gave up on fitting in, and have become confident all the time. I know that sometimes I might come across as selfish because it's very difficult for me to empathize, but it's not like I can change anything about myself. I like myself the way I am, and I'm not afraid to show everyone my true self.

I think I have average confidence except for my known deficits eg. conversation and social skills. I pretty much gave up on those long before I found out about ASDs.

I'm told I can come across as confident, a bit patronising too, but personally I never feel confident.

I think from an NTs point of view, the fact that I know my subject areas (maths and computers) very well means that I appear confident, but to be honest I've never been overly impressed with my skills in either one of those or in anything else.

Well, of course - who can be anything but nervous when a human is running things? As the saying goes: "If you want something done right you have to do it yourself".

I'm supremely confident in some areas, a bumbling doofus in others.

If it involves a personal interest/obsession, get outta my way, I'll handle this. :rambo:

If it involves looking cool and graceful during a social interaction with a stranger, uhm, er, whabwazzat?

It does depend what you mean by confidence! The choices offered as answers don't quite fit, for me. I think I'm quite confident although I can come across as arrogant, conceited or insecure but that wasn't the question!

Okay so just put I come across as over confident. I can't sit here and think of every possible angle. Plus too many options is just confusing.

It depends.. but there are a lot more situations in which I'm unconfident than confident. D:

"Confident", huh?

I used to fake it in order to stop someone else faking it on me. Now I just don't bother.

Is it just me or does that seem a little touchy? No offense meant!

I chose no.2. I'm confident about most things, but in some things I'm not.

I can identify with everything you have said, DustinTorch, but my best answer is that my confidence comes and goes. While I was growing up, I assumed a successful life would somehow eventually happen ... then for a while I later became sure I could somehow make one happen ... and now here I am at 59 and trying to figure out what is going on.

I picked number two ... then took a look and discovered I am in plenty of good company!

Whew.

Some days I am and some days I'm not.
