Hey all.

I am currently an undiagnosed aspie, and I am one of the lucky ones who's Mom not only is willing to listen to my suspiscions, but also believes them! She is almost positive herself that I have it.

I one time tried to talk to my Aunt about AS, but I could not force myself to say all of my symptoms, which led her to think I was imagining it all (and then she referred to aspies as psychos....). When talking to my Mom, it took me a couple of hours to fully describe, because it was like lugging an anvil uphill, forcing myself to talk about it like I did.

With a doctor, your time is obviously very limited. My mom knows all about my symptoms, and even told me about quite a few I didn't know about (mainly from my early childhood and from when I was a baby). I am going to our family doc to try and get a referral, do you think I should bring my Mom, that way if I freeze up, I can let her do some talking as well? I will also have a copy of my student records with me, which I will show the doc, as they support my position that I have AS. For the record, I am 18.

Let me know if I'm not being clear enough, and I'll try to clarify.

Since your mother would probably need to be interviewed sooner or later, whether you got the referral or not, I see no problem in taking her to the doctors appointment.

Realize though that since you are now 18, due to HIPPA, you will need to sign a release for your mother to be in the room.

I'm hoping to be tested for AS, and I'm 32. Unfortunately, my mother is one of those people who thinkks if you look and seem relatively normal, there;s nothing wrong with you. However, she HAS told me a couple of things, as has my brother (he's the one who told me I spoke "like an adult" when I talked, or told me I was like "a living encyclopaedia" and told me he gave me his "Tell me why" encyclopaedia when I was six (he was 10 at the time) because i kep asking him questions to which he didn't know the answers!

If your mom is supportive, you should take her. She'll be able to help explain your symptoms to the doctor when you run out of words to use. She sounds very helpful.

Hey all. Thanks for the advice! I think I'll go ahead and do that.

As for HIPPA, I live in Canada, so the laws will differ, I'm just not sure how.

It is helpful having a mom that doesn't subscribe to the myth that mental illness doesn't exist.

Definitely. Even if I make a list of what I want to say when I go to the doctor, I never get everything out so I take Mum with me to add her observations. She's also useful because I only remember half of what the doctor says ...
