I was writing someone about asperger's syndrome and they wrote back to me with the spelling of "asperberger's" syndrome and I don't know if that's even an acceptable alternate spelling... but it was really annoying me lol.

Isn't it appalling how people slaughter the English language?

is not the correct spelling!! This is the correct spelling: Asperger's. Spell the "g" like a "j" or "g", depending on how you feel it should be pronounced. :D

The appellation "Asperger's" is from researcher Hans Asperger and does not have a widely-used alternate spelling. The abbreviation AS and the colloquialism "aspie" are accepted variants among this local community. "Asperberger" is simply a misspelling that appears on several websites. I could see how someone could get the impression that it is an accepted term via a Google search, though.

yeah for some reason people stick in a B in the most weird places of the word. I have also seen "Asperger's" quite common in misspelling it :?

Except it's not an English word. It's a surname.

Well the thing is... I spelled it out for him first... So he was deliberately spelling it his own way and kept doing so even though all my responses had the correct spelling.

Grrr.

There must be an alternate spelling for you to use for his name too, right?

Those misspellings are probably from people unfamiliar with the correct spelling, and are spelling it the way it sounds. The way that name is frequently pronounced by an American English speaker will result in a "b" in a few places.

It probably just means that not only was the person unfamiliar with AS, but that he also didn't read what you wrote very carefully.
