I'm thinking about getting some government assistance and I could use some advice.
I was diagnosed autistic as a child, but that record is now lost because it was 25 years ago. I went to a bargain psychologist recently and he diagnosed me with depersonalization, tic, schizoid pd., and avoidant pd. disorders. (I'm pretty sure schizoid pd. is a misdiagnosis, but that is beside the point).

Anyhow, do you think that this diagnosis will qualify me for medicaid? (I have no income right now)

Is so, they will probably require me to visit a therapist again won't they? I stopped going because they weren't helping me.

I need the medicaid so I can get diagnosed by someone who specializes in diagnosing adults with autistic spectrum disorders. I also need to get my hearing checked and medicine for my anxiety.

I hate to go on welfare, but jobs give me so much stress/depression and that makes my depersonalization worse.

I just want to get better. :(

All advice is welcome.

I'm on medicaid. In Massachusetts it's called MassHealth. It goes by different names in each state, it seems. Here is some information on medicaid

http://medicare-medicaid.com/general-me ... id-online/

It says you can apply online. I did a search on Bing under "medicaid in" and tried a couple of different state abbreviations and got results on each. You don't say what state you're in so I can't be more specific.

Have you considered SS Disability? You'd need your Dr(s) to fill out a form they send out about your mental health diagnosis and any other health problems you have. Also SSI, which is help for poor people. I understand it is cash payments but I didn't qualify for it because I had too much savings when I applied for SS disability.

If you pay rent you can also try for foodstamps, just to free up a little bit of money. Every bit helps, you know. If you live where you need to heat your house you could also try looking for heating assistance. I found a site from the government to help you find federal assistance, it's

http://www.usa.gov/Citizen/Topics/Benefits.shtml

I did a search on bing for "where can i get a list of financial assistance". I assume if you added in your state abbreviation you'd find state assistance programs as well.

I wish you well. Hope this helps some.

Here in Missouri Medicaid pays for Psychiatrist and a certain number of Psychologist
visits.

If you get in SS Disability, you'll wind up with Medicare which covers Psychiatrist.
You'll be on your own for paying for Psychologist.

Currently being in the care of mental health care professionals is pretty much a given need to be deemed qualified for Disability.

The three most important things to keep in mind when applying are
1. Documentation
2. Documentation
3. Documentation

Be aware that you application will very likely be denied and you will then file an appeal.

Took 19 months for my appeal to be heard before a disability judge.

Find your local social services or family services office and ask to talk to a social worker.
They can get you set up for Medicaid.

You'll have to go to a Social Security office for Disability and SSI interviews and applications.

Those offices are not everywhere, nearest one to use out here is 45 miles away.

It is WORK to get this, but it can be done.

You have to have been on SS Disability for two years before you qualify for Medicare.

Unless, of course, you're already over 65.

There are usually local Mental Health Facilities that take Government Subsidies to treat those with low incomes or no income. If you go through one of those (if you're poor enough to qualify), their therapist/counselors can hook you up with a staff Psychologist (you might have to sit on a waiting list for a bit, they may only have one for an entire county, or an entire regional quadrant of the state), and it may not cost you anything at all, or the rate may be significantly discounted in accordance with your income level.

If you don't know which facilities in your area do that sort of thing, the local Chamber of Commerce can probably tell you (they might have info on a website). If all else fails, try calling a local television station and tell the receptionist you need to talk to whoever coordinates their community calendar or public affairs information - local reporters and interns are pretty well hooked in to who's what and where in their community.

Thank you for the info everyone. Right now, I will probably try for a re diagnosis and get some anxiety meds. I have thought about disability, but I want to see how I do on meds first. (Going to work and being around people just stresses me out so much! My tics get pretty bad.)

I have another question. Does medicaid pay for 100% of medical bills if I have no income- for instance, an autism specialist that probably charges a lot.

Oh, and I live in Ohio and I'm not old enough for medicare.

I'm going to go down to the Family and Job Services building and try to apply soon.

I went to one of those free mental health places about a year ago. They didn't do too good of a job helping me out. Though I might have to go back to them to get medicine.

Medicaid pays for you to see medicaid doctors. Medicaid doctors are almost never remotely competent.
