I was doing some research today and came across this link. I don't know about you but the myths [even though the link serves to debunk them] make me furious!! I guess it just proves how misunderstood and crazy society thinks we are...... oh how distressing :(

I still can't believe that some people think autism comes from Rain Man.

In my B&J fanfictions, my OC hates Rain Man because too many people use it as their diagnoses for autism and say her son doesn't have it or they assume he has some savant skills and then act all shocked that he doesn't have any and question how can he have it if he can't do the calculations in his head or count cards.

My neighbor(who's a nice guy btw) said-"People with autism are all kind of like into themselves aren't they?"

That list missed the biggest myth that I've encountered-- that autism is synonymous with mental retardation. That's the biggest problem, why such a ridiculously huge number of people don't get diagnosed. I think some states with separate mental health and mental retardation systems deal with autism exclusively in the mental retardation system.
Also of course, the myth that only boys can be autistic.

4. Autistic People Are a Danger to Society
Myth: Autistic people are dangerous.

Most Autistics being dangerous? Heh hardly!

Quote:
7. Autistic People Can't Do Much of Anything
Myth: I shouldn’t expect much of an autistic person.
Fact:This is one myth that, in my opinion, truly injures our children. Autistic individuals can achieve great things -- but only if they're supported by people who believe in their potential. Autistic people are often the creative innovators in our midst. They see the world through a different lens -- and when their perspective is respected, they can change the world.

Completly the truethful fact right there!
