G'day, my first post is a question.

To begin though, I believe I may have asperger's, but have had no diagnosis. I find many similarities with descriptions of the syndrome, but there are some I don't have (or have overcome?).

Anyways here is my question: do many aspies like to dance? I would see it as similar to stimming. However, it takes a little physical coordination, which may contradict association with AS. I enjoy dancing around a lot, even when there is no music. It's like venting bad energy and creating good energy. I also play Australian football (a full contact sport). I don't think my skills are very good though, and playing the sport as a child I was quite hopeless. Only by playing for many years, and once I was physically mature, have my skills improved.

So I guess that leads to another question: despite general clumsiness, is it possible for people with AS to attain physical skills through practice, practice, practice?

It's probably possible. Maybe more so for the people who don't find it as hard to begin with though.
I don't dance but that's probably more to do with social anxiety and not liking being close to people more than coordination, although I am quite clumsy. I sometimes randomly dance when I'm sat here though.

I personally love to dance, but I can't move my body a certian way to make it form into an actual type of dance, I usually just jump around and do alot of spins and try to belly dance haha but it never works out as planned haha.

I'm a red belt in Kung Fu and used to take up boxing.
Due to my health and finances it's been awhile, nevertheless when needed I can have good coordination.

Sadly however, I still can't ride a bike, skateboard, or roller blade.
I do tend to walk in to things but this is often my own lack of paying attention due to being in my own mind. When I need it I can grasp it.

I love dancing! I think it actually helps with coordination, and it's also a really good social opportunity for me. I swing dance, so I get to dance with other people, in a setting with really specific guidelines. Plus...it's always nice to put motion to music.

I would LOVE to learn how to swing dance-I was always fascinated by it even when I was little. But I never wound up learning 'cuz I figured I'd make a fool out of myself being clumsy :P

way too afraid of looking like an idiot to ever dance. The one time I tried, at someone else's senior prom, I was laughed at by her after about 3 seconds. I think that killed any chance of me ever trying again.

Coordination isn't a problem with me, though.

I think I read somewhere that dancing is not an aspect of coordination that aspies usually have trouble with; anyway, most of us seem to enjoy it. For me I only have trouble with like fine coordination.

Therre are some songs I could NOT not dance to.I did use to have to get drunk to dance around people but I would close my eyes and dance in my own world and it was one of my favorite things. As far as "dance steps"....I have poor memory and have enough problems learning Yoga postures(very cntrolled and slow)could never follow dance steps, nor did it seem as fun.

It's really fun...as for making a fool of yourself...everyone does at first...I am one of the most clumsy people I know, but the fun of dancing is worth the initial foolishness. Besides...since everybody has been there, no one makes fun of beginners.

LOve dancing. I have a number of younger friends (early 20's) and they know I like to dance. At the nightclubs I love hitting the dance floor with the girls and let the guys sit out and drink. It is great because the girls want to dance, the guys don't. The girls don't want to be hit on and I protect them from randoms and don't hit on them myself. The guys know that dancing is just what I like to do and like most things just do a "Yeah that's just rossco. That's what rossco does". It also saves the mates of mine whose girlfriends are trying to drag them onto the dance floor. They are like "Dance with rossco".
I learnt to dance in the 70's to Disco. As bad as it sounds I don't dance too badly and we all have a good time. I don't give a stuff I just react to the music and the girl/s in front of me.
I am hopeless picking up women too, so being around friends that are female or girlfriends of mates takes heaps of pressure off and allows us all to have a fun night.

Awesome, this is exactly what it's like for me too! I can relate to all the above, except for the 70's disco. I'm in my early 20's. I learnt just from goin to clubs, watching other people, and seeing as I wasn't talking to anyone I needed something to do! A passion for music helps too. And practice.

Back to sports, I was taken skiing as a child and am now a keen snowboarder. Last year I even spent time as an instructor. On one occasion I taught an autistic child who was actually a decent skiier for his age. I had never spent time with an autistic person before, it was quite an eye opener (Rain Man and a few docos on tv being my only prior info). He learnt primarily by mimicking my demonstrations, could hardly comprehend verbal instructions.

very true, maybe I'll give it a shot one of these days. I can do okay with steady rhythms, it's those faster moves I worry about, lol. But I guess as with most things you can get the hang of it. Thanks :D I'll definitely have to check into that. By the way, is it easier if you get like, one of those swing dance vids to learn from or if someone teaches you while you are at a place? I know it'd be a little awkward, but I have some friends that learn a lot better when surrounded by people doing the same things they are learning than one on one.

Guess what I mean is, how did you learn best?
