Yes, definitely. I don't completely agree with the word "disorder," but it is a difference that can be extremely disabling in many parts of life. It's nice to have an explanation for it all, both for oneself and to help others understand when certain things come up. If something has a name, then people take it more seriously... And it's easier to get help when you need it. If i had been diagnosed as a child, then having an IEP would have been extremely beneficial for me. Maybe it wouldn't have gone completely downhill after elementary school... because i could have definitely used some help. Nowadays i'm just lucky that i have such great parents that like for me to live with them and understand that i don't function like an average 22-year-old. The only time having an official diagnosis has really come in handy is in staying on my parents' insurance.. But if i was less fortunate, then i might need it for things like disability. I don't see my AS as a bad thing, really.. But it definitely causes some serious issues, and if it didn't then i wouldn't have gotten a diagnosis at all. If it's not causing any difficulties in your life, then you're not supposed to get diagnosed with it, according to the criteria, anyway.
