I wonder if anyone else feels that way about "room to work" on anything or improved concentration. I could be wrong, but it is something I feel and remember having better ability under said circumstances...
Yes, I feel the same way. I always have said that my room reflects my current state of mind, and I think it really works both ways. If there is too much clutter or junk I feel very cramped and distracted by all the things I have going on around me.
As for the music thing, I find music can calm me down, but if I am trying to write an essay, any type of sound is extremely distracting. My mind gets caught up in whatever noise is going on and I forget what I'm supposed to be doing. If anyone else has this problem, I recommend getting some earplugs, they work wonders for me.
I write essays rather disorganized, I copy down a lot of quotes, and scribble down my thoughts as they come (and they come fast, which is why they are all over the place). I end up reorganizing the paragraphs several times and fixing them so that they flow better once I have all of my ideas down.
One thing that I find helps is having a schedule or due time for myself. If I commit to trying to finish the essay by 7:00pm, it keeps me on track, because I'll look at the clock and say "Oh no, it's 6:30pm already, I need to get to work!" Just remember to set realistic goals, and give yourself some buffer time, otherwise you might get discouraged. I also take frequent brakes. Sometimes, if you can't concentrate, you can't concentrate, and you just have to accept that, and get away from your work for a little while. Just try to keep the breaks short, and it should be ok.
