I've seen topics here that some people on the spectrum do it but was curious how did you deal with it. Either stop doing it or doing it in private (I thought the shower was private so much for that dad heard me through the door!! !) Obviously you can take a guess on what it was about (College issue) More importantly (How I'd apologize to that Psychology teacher I upset) LOL! Any tips? Now I think my dad thinks I'm crazy!! !! I asked him if he ever talked to himself about what he had to get done at work he said no and asked what I was talking about I said nothing important. Any tips would be appreciated. I get into my own little world talking about the issue just lost in my own thoughts!! !!

I just do it! :P
It never really occurred to me that it would be bothering anybody...Nobody who I am around regularly would care....
I am particularly bad in the grocery store..I randomly read signs out loud..but I don't really pay attention to what the people there think of me...for the most part.

Haha - I actually talk to things alot, like my coffee maker (usually to offer an apology to the appliance). When people are around I just talk to my dog or cats about things, that way it doesn't seem as weird.

I noticed in my case its due to stress & trying to prepare myself (as much as possible) for odd/awkward/bad situations that could happen in the future (I've had issues w/ friends having breakdowns & telling me really creepy stuff from their childhoods so some of the stuff I contemplate out loud sounds bad. Also, I noticed I do it more when i need sensory stimulation or deep pressure. I've tried singing along to songs on the radio instead, jumping on my mini trampoline in my room (yes I have actually a mini trampoline, THANK YOU MOMMY :D) & giving myself deep pressure by rolling myself over a 14-15 pound medicine ball or laying under a 10-11 pound blanket I got from my stepsis (its my "new" bedding :) ). Stretching also helps alleviate tension in my case.

I used to talk to objects when I was young. I got over it after a couple of years of that kind of.

As for talking to oneself, just do it in a mumbly whispering fashion.

After a lifetime of talking to myself...I stopped.
It just became too much of a burden...people wondering if I was responding to voices heard that weren't there aka auditory hallucinations (which I've never really experienced...not truly) me trying to rationalize the habit by telling myself it was because I was an only child and due to the stress I endured my growing up years. That wasn't working, so I made a resolution: I am going to stop this habit once and for all! And, I did, except for the occasional sideways whisper now and then. I am happy being quieter.
Just decide you will stop and stop cold turkey, like smokers used to do, before nicoteen patches came along.

There's times it's been the most intelligent conversation of the day.

When myself talks to me, I just talk back and say "shut up". Works more then you would think.

I talk to myself all the time that now I just let my mouth do the talking, but of course, I do it in a private area where nobody could hear me... It's like when me and my girlfriend talk which can literally go on and on and on.

I talk to myself like I'm making vlog by an aspie and imagining being a YouTube star talking to myself.

I got one of those little ear piece sound "magnifiers" that are advertized on TV so you can hear what others are saying and you can keep the sound down and still hear, that sort of thing?
Anyway it was about 8 bucks. I wear it when out side running errands or walking to work and people think I am talking into a 'blue tooth'.

I love it. :D

Can you actually hear what others are saying with it well?

I talk with non-living objects that I use in my daily life more than I talk withy real people on the same day. Maybe it's just easier to talk without hearing answers, and it makes us more comfortable and relaxed. 8)

In other words we need to talk, but doing it with real people is a tiring thing for us, so talking without waiting for an answer and not to analyze anything makes us better.

So I do it everyday and it's one of my daily needs that I can't leave.

But i have a new IDEA. Obtaining a pet and talking with it may prevent talking to yourself. You can talk with a pet and no one will think that you are crazy because you are talking to a pet.

Do it all the time myself. Only when I'm on my own but certainly others can hear. My housemate once mentioned it when she was drunk, that I'm "always arguing with someone". Great advantage of this is it conceals my autism as she probably thinks I'm schizophrenic instead! :)

I usually modulate the volume when I remember others might hear. But since the entire reason you're talking to yourself is the intensity of thoughts it takes time to remember that.

Does anyone ever get a cell (mobile) phone (real or fake phone) and pretend they are using it when they are talking to themselves?

Do it in your head.

What do you do to the coffee maker that an apology is in order?
Like the tip about diverting the chatting to the creatures!
