Does anybody else here have trouble with refraining themselves from biting their fingers ? I started to, at a very young age, bite my nails and bite the skin from all around the fingers surrounding the nails.

I do it rather obsessively. If I start biting a finger but it get's really painful...for some reason I just have to finish it. I have to continue until it's all done - or I feel really bad. Then of course my finger stings for days.

I've tried to use the nail biting stuff but that didn't stop me - I quite liked the funny taste.

What could I do ? Anybody else have this problem ? Any solutions ?

Same, Ive had this problem for as long as i can remember. What seemed to help me was doing something physical to keep me from biting them. If that doesnt help, try just running your nails over your teeth, or wearing rubber gloves on your hands. Might also try using a file (like from a small pocket knife/folding knife). This wont "cure" the issue, but it should lessen it.

I have recently made an attempt to take better care of my nails...I got a cutical therapy cream that kinda moisturizes the area around my nails, otherwise I get horrible hangnails and whatnot...and I put a nail harder on my nails..My hands always tend to look really bad.
Anywhoo..having all the gunk on them deters me from biting them

For some reason instead of biting my nails I've always peeled them off. It's just as bad a habit but my cousin and I are the only people I've ever heard of doing it because most nail destroying habits are the biting sort. I try to stop but then they get too long and they bother me and when I reach the point where they need to go immediately, I never have a nail clipper close enough to use it so I just rip them off, usually far too short, and they end up painful and sometimes bleeding. I've had multiple problems with one of my toes where I'll take the nail off too much and when it grows in it gets painful and infected and I've had to go to the doctor and get part of the nail removed. And yet I can't make myself stop!! ! No matter how many times I tell myself this is the last time!

I used to really badly, and then all of a sudden one day in my mid 20s I just stopped... not really sure why. I think the sensation of biting on a tough nail was suddenly worst than the satisfaction of doing it.

I do that too and have done for years!! Managed to stop myself biting nails, nail varnish worked pretty well, though when they get too annoying I do still bite them to where they're not but I have more control. However the skin around my fingers I can't stop biting or peeling. My mum has told me off so many times because often they end up bleeding and I almost always have little cuts around at least one finger. I just hate the sensation of loose skin. I also think it increases when I'm stressed.

I stopped biting my nails years ago. But I do still obsessively peel the skin. I actually made one of my fingers bleed just a few minutes ago. Sportin' a bandaid right now.

My husband gets upset when I do this as he does not want me to hurt myself and he will try to prevent my from picking my fingers. When he does this I get very, very upset because I compusively *HAVE* to get that skin off of my finger.

It's pretty bad actually. :?

Oh yes, I have problems with that definitely.... But I do it alot worse when i'm really nervous about an event that normally would happen, normally things like huge parties and being in a crowd social situations../

But now for some stupid reason, its turned into a bad habbit and I rather wish I never bite my nails in the first place... After all, sometimes, nails do grow pretty fast :D

Always have done. I tried that foul-tasting paint when I was young, and I really hated it but got used to it within a week and didn't care any more! I'm pretty sure my mum gave up on me at that point and threw the rest away!

I peeled my nails rather than bite them off. They were very short for many years.

But one day, I just decided to quit. I put all my willpower into fighting the desire to peel my nails off. The sensation of having longer nails drove me crazy for the first week or so, but after that I didn't care anymore. Now my nails are half an inch long, and everybody thinks they're fake. I really love taking care of them - filing them, buffing them, pushing back the cuticles and most of all painting them! :D
