I've finally got my first appointment booked for Saturday. I've been told I will likely have to have two or three sessions, but they haven't specified what will happen or if I need to bring anything.
I'm really nervous, but at least I have my appointment now. I've been waiting for over a year!

When are you going to be assessed? You should probably ask what is going to happen.

Is this through the NHS? I'm unsure whether to trust the NHS or just to save the bother, save up and go private. I've heard a few diagnostic process horror stories. :(

The whole system here in the UK seems to be "hit and miss", I have been waiting for a initial assessment for several months (they've cancelled 3 times), I have also contacted several private clinics and have been quoted anything between £300 & £3000 :? .

Getting really frustrated and am starting to wonder why I'm bothering.

Hit and miss is impossible. It's hit or miss.

Not so. You can shoot twice, hit once and miss the second shot. Hit and miss.

Technically you could consider it from the point of view of one case or many cases.

For one case, you hit or you miss

For many cases, some hit and some miss

So i'm happy with either expression, it's one of the nice clear expressions i actually use in my day to day language.

Now without wanting to take the thread off topic, "I could care less" vs "I couldn't care less", now that is an annoying error, you can't even pretend it's sarcasm or irony beucase i'm sure neither really works. It has to be "I couldn't care less"

Going back to the original post, is this your first assessment after speaking to a GP? In which case consider it similar to going to A&E and seeing the nurse there within 20 minutes of arriving. The nurse is going to make sure you're not completely wasting their time and should be going to your GP, and checking you're not likely to die in the next couple of hours.
That's what the first assessment is, it's triage. Are you so bad you need immediate help, are you likely to kill yourself or worst someone else, or is the notion of you having AS so rediculous there's no point in further assessment. Assuming neither happen, you'll get refered on to a proper specialist for proper diagnosis. Make sure you get out of it what you want, i got a summary of "well you're married with a child, there's no cure so if you really want to i can make you an appointment for a diagnostic assessment but is there any point really?" To which i said yes.

Bring notes, bring examples. I considered it as though i had to sell to this person that i had AS, but without lying. There's no point making things up, but you also need to get through to the person your day to day struggles. It's another case of my ultimate aspie frustration, in this case we need to use our impaired social ability to convince someone of our impaired social ability...

I was simply implying that I can hit (get an appointment/referral) AND THEN miss (nothing happens/ get cancelled).

You got the HIT, AND I MISSED.

I'm judging by your uniform that your at school, the system in the UK is mainly to diagnose AS in childhood (I'm 32), maybe I live in an area that's got poor Psych services or I'm unlucky.

i also got my diagnosis within a month here in the uk... i got diagnosed a few days ago, and think i'm in a lil bit of shock at the suddenness of it and how smooth the process was. especially as i was psych-ing myself up to appeal on the grounds that if i was denied an assessment, i would be denied a path to progress if i did have aspergers. i had been self diagnosed for 6 years, and the ease of my official diagnosis has led me to question why i hadn't requested a referall sooner, but having been unsure of my own self diagnosis at times i guess i needed that time to be sure i wasn't kidding myself. plus i didn't know there was someone i could see right on my doorstep...
and Alycat, hope all goes well for you. i was nervous too. i really couldn't stomach any food for days prior to my assessment i was so nervous.

Cool! Good luck. It was a lot easier than I'd thought.
All that happened was that they asked me lots of questions about me and my life.
