Can you tell me if AS is genetic? I know plenty about Asperger's, (of course because I have it) but I can't know for sure if it is genetic. I have heard from various sources that say that it is or it isn't. Is it?

I'd like to know if my no good piece of f***ing sh*t father has it. That can tell my why he's a no good piece of f***king sh*t.

If telling you there has been many genes identified linked to autism and such, indicates a possible genetic inheritance factor that would give you at least a strong potential cause. I have AS, my oldest son has Autism and my youngest may be AS and their father is non-autistic.

I have AS, my dad has AS, my dad's dad has AS. It's genetic. My mom is an NT hard-core style.

I think some of it is, if not in whole is genetic in nature, then genetics is a contributing factor. I have read many articles and seen many T.V. programs that back up the theory that people in the Autistic spectrum have a genetic component to their underlying pathology.

Further evidence also leads me to believe the above assumption is correct. In my family alone immediate and extended there are at lest five individuals including myself diagnosed or very likely are within the autistic spectrum. My Father, Me, and My Nephew and in the extended family I have two distant cousins that have severe autism and they are brothers.

I apologize if this post sounds increasingly formal I wrote this quickly and my aspie-ness tends to emerge when I am occupied or unable to delegate time to de-formalize my writing.

It seems to be genetic in virtually every case I have read about/come across but what I would like to know (I'm not trying to thread hijack here) is can it skip generations or spontaneously occur?

I ask this because I have AS yet no one else in my family does, or at least they don't appear to. But then my father was adopted and we know nothing of where he came from and no one has AS on my mother's side of the family. My mum and her family suspect that my dad has it but it is not something he is likely to admit to at the age of 53 and if he does have it lives quite well with it. So I can assume that I am the only one in my family with Asperger's Syndrome.

Must be able to, or it wouldn't be able to start.

Plus I seem to have it more than my Dad, so if it can change in severity then I figure it can chage totally...?

Yeah, it does show up in families like it is genetic. And there are lots of instances where it does skip. Because it appears to go in a spectrum (with some being worse cases than others) and because people have different variables (for example, I'm not overly sensitive to sound like many are, but I have serious problems with light) all this suggests that it could be multiple genes working in unison. In that light, it wouldn't be infeasible for it to be able to skip several generations, depending on how many aspies or people with "aspie genes" bred into the family tree.

As far as I know, I'm the first person in my family to have AS. That doesn't mean it's not genetic, though. I mean, it has to start somewhere...

Nobody else in my family has AS as far as I know, but my dad claims to have mild OCD (though he often doesn't act like it--he seems just like a neurotic NT to me), and my brother has dyslexia. I do think, though, that it's genetic to an extent. Personally, I'd rather not have kids for this very reason--I wouldn't want to deal with a mini-me, so to speak. I don't think I'm good enough at dealing with stress for that....

my dad grew up with ADD. and my cousin, like me, has AS. I'm thinking it could be genetic.

hahaha... kinda brings a whole new meaning to the ever repeated phrase by our parents, "When you grow up I hope you have kids just like you!"

It could be both genetic or spontaneous. Most genetic mutations or differences had to start somewhere. In some conditions the genes may lay dormant and have something activate them. And like in autoimmune diseases there often seems to be a family history but it does not have to be a perfect direct line of inheritance or necessarily express itself in exactly the same way. However other conditions like muscular dystrophy can have a predictable pattern of inheritance once they know someone is either a carrier or directly effected. One study I was looking at showed that parents - even if they did not have AS or HFA themselves - seemed to have some mild spectrum behaviors. That would seem to me that it is inheritable.

Yeah, my family on my Dad's side is rife with people who have mild spectrum behaviors, but not necessarily AS or HFA.

No one in my family before me that i know of has AS. My parents and 5 brothers and sisters all NTs. I read an article somewhere that AS maybe a genetic predisposition, because identical twins only have a 60% chance of having it if they're twin does. It said there maybe a environmental factor involved. My twin brother's son is really obsessed with trains and is very smart for his age 4. He speaks very grownup and uses big words. But maybe because he is an only child and is around adults a lot. He is not dx AS i hope he doesn't have it.
