Does anyone else exhibit this behavior or is it my own personal oddness? When I was a child I would constantly be chewing on something...usually the collar of my shirts but also blankets, etc. This went on for years.

Later on, when I smoked it was not a problem. Since I quit now I have to have something in my mouth (toothpicks, mints, etc) at all times or I chew the skin off of my lips or bite my tongue until it is raw. Strange, huh?

I've noticed I chew on my lips a lot and touch the ends of my fingers to my lips.

I used to chew my tongue a lot. I chew pens but a lot of people do.
I had to stop myself from chewing on a pen lid because a 13 year old boy choked to death that way.

Oh yes. Chewing a few pieces of gum everyday is one thing I just have to do. Otherwise I knaw the insides of my cheeks and lips to bleeding point. It doesn't stop it completely though, sometimes I'm chewing and knawing at the same time :?.

Yes. I always thought I was orally fixated but that of course is looking at it from another perspective. The thing I do most often, which is nearly constantly, is press my lips together over and over again. It's not attractive. I'm doing it now.

Used to do the same thing...had to be rubbery though, plastics had no 'give' to them.

Me -

lips - a long time ago, especially in winter it hurts [do we count nibling off fingernails, handnails?

pencils - later - paint can be uncomfortable and was probably lead based
plastic pens - and their caps - got disgusting to look at after a while.

From childhood till today, the earpieces of my glasses.

Before highschool, sometimes the tips of my collars - they had plastic inserts in those days, so there was some resistance.

AND of course the handkerchief that gets unconsciously in my mouth when I vibrate my leg while writing.

My wife - mostly the collar of whatever she is wearing

Im a smoker right now. Really want to quit but havent been able to despite all my efforts. Before I started and in the brief periods that I did quit I chewed on everything. It started with chewing on my colar and then chewing on the pull string on a hoodie or a pen or pencil. I chewed alot of gum and toothpicks too. I still chew on my lips and fingers to the point of bleeding.

I've always been a chewer. I wouldn't chew just anything though, it had to be just the right consistancy, not to hard and not too soft to be chew worthy for me. I've been teased and harassed because of it but I think it's prevented me from taking up smoking as a teen. I've been an agressive nail chewer ever since I could remember but starting school is what amped it. I would chew and chew until they bled and would still continue to chew them. My parents tried putting this bad tasting stuff on them to get me to stop but I would still chew them. It drove me crazy when teachers accused me of "eating" my nails. It made me go into meltdown mode very often. I would simply chew them and spit the broken peices out. To eat somehing you must sallow it. Nail chewing was really just a glorfied stim I did it when stressed and if someone tried to prevent me from doing so all Hell broke loose. I got such a high from the sensation of my nails under my teeth. Nails were just the right consistincy. When I ran out of fingernails to chew, I would chew my toenails out of desperation. I didn't care who saw me do it at home but at school I would go into the bathroom stalls so my as*hole teacher couldn't have something else to humiliate me about. I personaly think nail biting is a key factor in why I never got into smoking. I'd rather have no nails than no lungs.

i do the whole chewing thing too. i chew on my nails, like i just gnaw on them not bite them off. i also chew skin off my lower lip when i am nervous or bored, and i chew on the inside of my cheek alot too. i don't tend to chew on my clothes, personally, because i am the only one in the family who sews, so i get stuck fixing everything... but my little brother (who also has AS) used to chew holes in the neckline of his shirts. he only just stopped doing this about two years ago.

Yes, habitually. Fingernails are often destroyed, will gnaw on pencils at times... different things at different times in my life, as I think back on it. Interesting, not something I would have otherwise thought about.

i chew most of the time... that's why my username is 'pencapchew' (though it is actually a nirvana song from the Outcesticide album).

i don't mean to chew pens, and i try not to when i'm using other peoples/nice pens, but the pen is in my mouth before i know it. on numerous occasions i had been told off in school because i had chewed pens til they broke, and i had ink on my face or all over my work. i also liked the feel of chewing pencils, except they're a bit bitty lol.
i also used to chew on the sleeves of my t-shirts as a kid too, which used to annoy my mum.

these days i have a problem with chewing my nails. ever since i started living independently. not to the point of pain or blood or anything but til it jus felt right. 'cause once i start i gotta finish. many days i have spent 3 or 4 hours jus chewing my nails nonstop.
i also chew the inside of my left check... even now i have a little bit of cheek in between my teeth lol. i actually find i gurn a little too when i'm concentrating sometimes.

i sometimes chew my hands/fingers and forearm too

I have the worst oral fixation of all times. I smoke a pack a day give or take, eat sunflower seeds pretty much constantly, munch out my lower lip real bad etc that's always been my A#1 stim.

Smoking was by far the worst/best fuel to the fire that could ever happen. I'd love to quit but it is amazing for me on so many levels. I am fully aware I sound like a dirtbag saying so but I can't deny it.
